Issue No. 36: Hues, Hopes, and Hidden Histories: The Weekly Wondrous World

Issue No. 36 - Welcome back, dear reader, to Issue No. 36 of The Experientialist where we’re celebrating this auspicious number, a figure steeped in ancient wisdom and cosmic significance. You see, 36 isn’t just any ol' number—it’s a portal to the stars. In the mystical realm of ancient Egyptian and Babylonian astrology, 36 Decans ruled the heavens, each one a celestial guardian watching over humanity. Now, we don’t know of any scientific basis in ancient astrology. But who are we to argue with people who spent their days staring at the sky and coming up with increasingly elaborate explanations for why their crops failed?

Let's explore the cosmic coincidence of 36 and see how it weaves its way through the tapestry of Design, Technology, Commerce, and Culture.

36 is the unsung hero of Design. From the bold 36-point font sizes that demand your attention to the precise 36-inch measurements (in the Imperial system, we call this a "yard") that make everything from a skyscraper to a room feel just right, 36 is the unsung hero of the design world. This unassuming digit is the backbone of countless designs, from the fabric bolts that your fit your steez to the font sizing and spacing that makes your Insta flex. It's the secret sauce that makes our world look so aesthetically pleasing. So next time you’re admiring a beautiful design, give a silent thank you to the number 36.

Still don't think much of the number 36? Well, it holds the key to unlocking extraordinary Technological experiences. Add a zero, and it's everywhere! From robots that can twist and turn like contortionists, to the immersive 360-degree experiences of virtual reality, and the precise 360-degree rotations of 3D models, the number 36 is the secret ingredient that transforms the digital realm into a tangible, interactive experience.

The number 36 is a behind-the-scenes workhorse in Commerce. From the moment a product is packaged in a 36-inch box and loaded onto a 36-pallet truck, to the moment you finance it with a 36-month loan, this number plays a crucial role in the global supply chain. Without the number 36, who would we be to hoard endless possessions, filling our homes with unnecessary clutter and our lives with needless consumption?

Culturally, 36 is not just a number, but a license to scheme. The Thirty-Six Stratagems, a Chinese text on military strategy, is basically a playbook for world domination, disguised as a self-help book. These 36 sneaky tactics, from feigning insanity to borrowing a corpse, have been used by everyone from Sun Tzu to your ex-boyfriend. So, the next time you're in a tricky situation, remember the wisdom of the ancient Chinese and outsmart your opponents with a little bit of strategic trickery.

So, there you have it. The number 36, a cosmic constant, a universal truth. It's the foundation of Design, the engine of Technology, the lifeblood of Commerce, and the soul of Culture. Now go forth and spread the word about the power of this extraordinary number. But before you do, let's take a look at what Issue No. 36 has in store.

This issue of The Experientialist kicks off with a wild trip to an elite secret society where, tequila, temazcals, and transcendence meet for an eco-conscious bacchanal. We then take you to Olafur Eliasson's latest urban hallucination that redefines what it means to "get lost in the city," followed by a neon-soaked Lite-Brite playground that reminds us of a simpler time entirely lacking in adult supervision. From there, in a twist on tradition, we’ll whisk you away to the Giza Pyramids, where 4,500 years of Egyptian history are now the backdrop for laser projections as timeless as... well, choose your favorite EDM festival. Toss in AI dancers who pirouette like machines (because they are) and the long-anticipated arrival of a Martian DIY housing market, where building materials are literally dirt cheap, but the commute is astronomical. If your mind isn’t maxed out yet, we'll stop by a blazing desert art scene, roam about a "wanderplay" where the ordinary is delightfully upended, take a detour through a room of empathetic interiors that proves even furniture can understand you better than most people, and finish up at a working-class residence, stuffed with taxidermy and enough plastic mistletoe to make your own living room feel suspiciously bland.

So off we are, here were go, let's dig in...

A Gilded Getaway

Lulu's Luxurious La-La Land: A Tale of Tequila, Temazcals, and Transcendence

Lulu L., the self-proclaimed sorceress of soirée supremacy, has conjured up a secret society of the super-rich and spiritually inclined. Her brainchild, ONDALINDA, is a hedonistic haven where the elite gather to indulge in a bizarre blend of backwoods shamanism and high-society excess. Imagine Burning Man, but with private jets, private islands, and a whole lot more privilege. Galerie (9 minutes)

Eliasson's Haunting Hallucinations

A Blurred Reality: Eliasson's Urban Intervention

Olafur Eliasson, the high priest of hazy hallucinations, has conjured a cosmic cacophony of color and confusion. His latest work, "Lifeworld," is a psychedelic spectacle that transforms bustling cityscapes into ethereal dreamscapes. Either this mind-bending masterpiece invites viewers to lose themselves in a fog of ambiguity, challenging our perception of reality and leaving us questioning our own existence... or by reducing art to a series of soft, indistinct shapes, Eliasson has proven that even the most talented artists can produce truly terrible work. We suspect we'll never really know, and that's the beauty of art, or the curse. Hyperbeast (4 minutes)

Bee the Change

The Hammer Museum’s latest exhibit dares you to rethink climate change and social justice through 100 pieces of art, as well as an actual bee sculpture that might just guilt you into composting. This exhibit spans generations and presents 100 works from 20 creators, including Lan Tuazon’s plastic recycling station, a green oasis from South L.A.’s self-described “gangsta gardener” Ron Finley (who we had the great pleasure to collaborate with at GOOD Worldwide Inc), and a literal hive of activity around?Garnett Puett’s?Untitled (Paradoxical Garden Downstream), a trio of wax figures buzzing with honeybees (they’re behind glass and?a few curtains but you may still find some nearby wild bees attracted to it).? Guest curated by our notoriously talented friend, Glenn Kaino, and Mika Yoshitake, and carefully crafted to poke at your eco-consciousness, the show stirs up questions like, “What would Greta do?” and “Why aren’t we all beekeepers by now?” If art can save the planet, the Hammer Museum might have just found the sting.

Scoops up, peeps! "Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice" is presented as part of the J. Paul Getty Museum’s region-wide initiative "PST ART:?Art and Science Collide" and exhibits at the Hammer Museum from September 14, 2024-January 5, 2025. Tickets are free.

When the Pyramids Went Pop

From Hieroglyphs to Holograms: Modern Art at Egypt’s Oldest Wonder

Forget Egypt’s 4,500-year history—today, it’s all about laser beams, digital mosaics, and judgmental AI's remarking on our life choices, all splashed across the Giza Pyramids like history’s wildest karaoke machine. ?The fourth edition of Forever Is Now has transformed the iconic Giza Pyramids into a modern art museum, merging ancient history with contemporary creativity.?We reported on this last issue, but with more remarkable images of these dazzling artworks flooding in, we had to revisit the scene. As curator Nadine Abdel Ghaffar says, it’s an invitation to rethink the timeless sands of Giza—now upgraded with a bit more shimmer and surrealism. The Future is Foxtrot

This isn't just about fancy footwork – it's about the one-two-three count being replaced by ones and zeroes.? So, next time you're twirling around the living room, remember: your every move could be data-mined and used to train the next generation of dancing machines. The Guardian (6 minutes)
