Issue #30 - YouTube Stories to go!
Hello and welcome back! Not a vast amount of news this week but still something worth brewing a tea or coffee over and having a quick sit down. We're yet at another bank holiday this week, letting us have Monday off and with this gorgeous weather, how could you not be excited?
General articles:
Some big news from YouTube this week. YouTube are killing off stories! For someone who doesn't even use YouTube, let alone their story feature, I can say I'm not too gutted however, we're all different. I'm more of an Instagram story type girl rather than a YouTube story girl. Therefore, I will admit my knowledge is a little low but I gather they worked the same as other platform stories. The usual 24-hour post and then after that time limit, it has disappeared. Originally starting back in 2017, the 'Stories' were named 'Reels', which we now know more commonly from Instagram. With a bit of digging, it seems that YouTube got on the Reel line before Instagram as Instagram released their 'Reels' back in 2020, three years later. Anyway, this isn't a Reel lesson, we're here to discuss YouTube Stories! If you were a fan of the feature, I'd buy your leaving decorations for June 26th as this will be its day of departure. After this day users will no longer be able to publish on their Stories and The Verge states "existing posts will expire after seven days." From reading articles, I get the feeling, it wasn't a very popular feature. We all know YouTube as the platform that makes the longer versions of video content therefore we appreciate the attempt of them trying to make the platform accessible for this feature but maybe just focus on YouTube Shorts!

Snapchat
Snapchat doesn't present itself with a big story this week. Despite that, I have chosen to discuss this recent news feature that I found whilst doing my research. Snapchat now allows for you to virtually have painted nails. Ooh la la. Yes, it's as it reads, literally AR nails but why is this so important? Well in the way of all things AR it does have its downside, which I feel I may go on about more often than not, but it's also important to remember its opportunities. In this case, if you're a small nail salon, a piece of tech of this calibre is the perfect opportunity for your business to integrate technology for your clients. It's a great way to enhance user engagement and interaction with a brand. These filters allow users to experience a brand's products or services in a fun and interactive way, creating a memorable experience that they are likely to share with their friends and followers.?Not only that but Snapchat will allow a CTA for the filter users - usually directing you to a website or social media page. This news story deserves to be in as I can now check what colour suits me, but more importantly, what doesn't.

No big news from the other social platforms so Elon Musk has decided to take the social spotlight this week. Next up on the release features of Musk's plan is PIP. Also known as picture-in-picture. This will allow users who are watching a video to still be watching even after they exit the platform. For example, when you still want to watch the new season of The Kardashians but know deep down you should be doing your uni work so you have to live with watching it in a small, square screen in the corner. The great news does not stop there though! Another new feature sees the user having the ability to go forward 15 seconds and back 15 seconds when they want when watching movies on Twitter! Things in the Twitter house just got crazy! These new features will be introduced sometime next week. Video seems to be a desired route that Twitter wants to go down which, in my opinion, would probably make Twitter more likeable. It's a form of media we're no stranger to and it works and keeps us hooked on the platforms. There is a lack of clarification on whether or not this is just for Blue Twitter users, as it feels like most features are just for them, however, due to a lack of information I can only assume these features are for everyone! Happy days!

Meta:
Meta have been slapped with an unfortunate fine from the EU. Any guesses as to why? Due to data breaches! Who saw that one coming? CNN Business reports that the social giant have been ordered to pay a record fine of $1.3 billion! Now that's more than just a bit of pocket change. CNN reports the issue was that the company were "transferring the personal data of Facebook users to servers in the United States." I'm sure I can speak for most Facebook users, seeing as I am one myself, and state that we did not sign up for our data to be transferred overseas. According to CNN "The?EU regulator said the processing and storage of personal data in the United States contravened Europe’s signature data privacy law, known as the General Data Protection Regulation. Chapter 5 of the?GDPR ?sets out the conditions under which personal data can be transferred to third countries or international organizations." When we're discussing record-breaking fines, the current record is apparently held by Amazon - another big, corporate giant.

And that draws us to end the end of our social news. Only a short one this week so let's hope there will be some new updates for us to discuss next week. Have a brilliant bank holiday!
Opinion of the week:
'The Happy Meal toys that McDonald's once had, are not the same today'
One of my closest friends ironically bought me a Happy Meal to cheer me up this week. Completely forgetting that the Happy Meal included a toy, however, to my disappointment I received a small activity book based on a character, who'd I'd never heard of and one pencil for the colouring... 1. I remember when Happy Meal toys were pure gold. I mean they were plastic bits of rubbish but when you were a kid, they were great.
