Issue #24 Leaders: Is Your Attitude Worth Catching?

Leaders—one of the fundamental lessons you learned early on is that you set the example for those who follow you. One area where we need to practice more self-awareness in leadership is our attitude.

"Attitude reflects leadership, Captain." That line from Remember the Titans hits hard because it’s true. As a leader, you may not be able to control others' attitudes, but you can absolutely influence them with yours.

If you’re not sure how your attitude is showing up, ask someone close to you for an honest “fact-finding” assessment. Use a scale of 1-10;1 being terrible, 10 being exceptional. And no 5’s. Five is neutral, safe, and doesn’t tell you anything useful. Be ready to hear the truth, even if it stings.

I like to think I have a strong, positive attitude, but I know that’s not always the case. Thankfully, I have people in my life who call me out when my attitude is going viral for all the wrong reasons. I also go on “fact-finding” missions for feedback to be the leader people want to follow and deserve.

So, here’s your #steeltoesrequired challenge: Who will you ask today about your attitude? And more importantly - are you ready to listen them?

Dennis LaRue Jr. - Awesome post I was recently reading somewhere that one of the key secrets to professional success is personality. I like to see "personality" as a combination between attitude and character. Some may believe that personality is innate - but if we look at it as a combination of 2 areas in our life that with enough inner work, we can change - then it would make sense why personality is a defining element of success. Curious to hear your thoughts...
