Spring is here and barbeque season is approaching! This long weekend, I’ve been reflecting on the events that Cobalt Institute?has attended so far in 2024: the Future Minerals Forum, Mining Indaba, PDAC, and most recently, Giga Europe. At all of them, we heard a similar theme: the race to deliver critical minerals is heating up, but big financing gaps remain.
True, the level of ambition is exciting and it’s gratifying to see mining and critical minerals at the centre of the sustainability debate. But as the 1980s?American burger advert put it: Where’s the beef? Many are beefing that funding – whether public or private – is not keeping up with the investment that is needed...

Calculating the carbon footprint of nickel and cobalt?
This joint Cobalt Institute and Nickel Institute webinar provided participants with information on the carbon footprint requirements that Indonesian nickel and cobalt producers will face.?
With speakers including Susanna Andreasi Bassi (European Commission, DG Joint Research Center) and Johannes Drielsma (Global Battery Alliance), the event drew 250 attendees from the metals and mining industry, governments, civil society, academia and research institutes.
Cobalt Institute 's Tom Fairlie showed the work undertaken in the cobalt industry to ensure that companies are prepared to respond to the data requirements, providing an overview of the industry average data for Cobalt collected by Cobalt Institute and how we help companies to demonstrate compliance.
This webinar was the first in a series of topical webinars related to sustainability & ESG in Indonesia. Future editions will cover ESG requirements and human health and environmental aspects related to nickel and cobalt.
