Summer is soon upon us, and in the Carman household we are sure to be relying heavily on our third parent: Netflix to keep our house ticking during the school holidays. However, holidays also mean something of a chance to breathe and review our careers. Whilst real estate in general enjoys a good holiday and downtime during key dates in the year, its constituents often use this time to reflect and make decisions affecting their careers leading to an increase in candidate registrations immediately after summer, Christmas and school holiday dates. So, I thought it helpful to share some lessons on how to make the most of this time. If you choose to explore your options how best might you navigate this next stage??

Making THE decision, the greatest hurdle employees face in the job market is not WHICH job to take but WHEN to leave that job. Deciding to leave an employer and the stress and anxiety this can cause will lead many to avoid the decision altogether. However, I am here to remind all that this decision is not the equivalent of stepping off the precipice into the unknown. If you are at all dissatisfied with an aspect(s) of your employment the most logical and easiest route is to look for perspective. Gaining the information to inform the decision to leave an employer is vital to not only making this decision confidently but also securely. Employees at this stage need only concern themselves with learning more about the world beyond their employer, what they take for granted or standard may well be very different in new roles. As such mine and the advice of my colleagues Macdonald & Company is to simply take the much smaller step of learning what is on offer. Speak to those in senior positions of your peers, put aside any preconceived ideas, and open yourself up to learn more about how each employer operates. There is no more expectation on the employee to accept a job after simply reading a job description, than there is on an employer offering the job to someone based purely on a CV.?Both need time to learn more about each other.
…the greatest hurdle employees face in the job market is not WHICH job to take but WHEN to leave that job
Speaking to recruitment consultants here at Macdonald & Company will help you learn more about the immediate employment market through to the trajectories necessary to reach long-term ambitions. Only after you have demystified the unknown and truly confident about how it compares to your current situation do you need to make the decision NOW is the time to leave your employer, or NOT.

I will continue looking into the topic of preparing for that new role in subsequent newsletters looking at “Is the CV required”, Success in the interview room, and How to accept a new role.??
