Issue #15 - TikTok insights are now bigger and better
Hello and welcome to this week’s editions of What’s The Point. Now I hadn’t planned for any specials but we start our edition with a Valentine's day related article which I thought was interesting. That’s coming from me, someone who’s not so keen on Valentine’s so stick around be prepared to be all up to date on your social media news. We’re switching it up when it comes to our weekly PinPointer. Usually I’ll ask someone from our social or creator team to make their comments, however instead we’re mixing it up for the next couple of weeks and it’s been decided to feature people who wouldn’t usually get a spotlight. This week is Annabel, PinPoint’s own Production Manager!?
Our first story, unfortunately, is Valentine's related however the duration of the feature was only for one day. What was that feature I hear you ask? Well… that feature was the ability to celebrate someone's stories with 6 different ‘love’ related emojis. The regular feature usually entails 6 emojis. One consisting of a fire flame, laughing face, red heart, laughing face and 2 others which off the top of my head I can’t remember. This for me usually pops up when I want to swipe or click to the next story and it will slide up. Accidentally sending a laughing face emoji to someone who’s just announced their breaking up or a heart emoji to your crush or to someone you’ve just met and decided to take the plunge to follow them and now you’ve gone and done this. If you haven’t done this then, you’re lucky. In this love season, it didn’t really matter. You put a love related emoji on a love related post… not an issue. Shows you’re supporting the couple! Social Media Today make a great comment in that it’s the first time Instagram has ever changed this panel. Personally I think it would be great if we could have a wide selection. A suggestion is that Instagram still keep the 6 but have a different selection of 6 which integrate different emojis. We could have the general ones, i.e the ones we have now and then maybe one group of animals, another one hearts etc. I don’t know! I’m not working at Instagram yet so I have some time to map out my ideas. The animated side when using these emojis still continued for users when they opened up these reactions. Continuing on, Social Media Today also revealed that Instagram had released some insights into what was most popular when adding the hashtag #love. Here’s what they found in a, you guessed it… love themed visual.
Let's from hear from Annabel! "As for Instagram, I’ve got to say, I love love. So giving people more options to share the love can only be a good thing! I’d also say that it does provide an interesting way to revive and highlight a standard feature. It’s also not at all surprising to me that #dogs is one of the top loved themes on Instagram, as it takes up almost my entire feed. I hope this can finally settle the dogs vs cats debate and (much to Emily’s dismay) this does make it fairly clear that dogs are winning the battle."

TikTok
What’s new TikTok? Well, if you love your insights then you’re going to love this new update from the platform. In a recent video, published on Facebook, TikTok announced that you will be able to get access to ‘TikTok Insights Data Drop’. What does this entail? As the video states: ‘More insights, more countries, more industries, more holidays, more, more, more’ Curious I decided to click on the link and see where this led me too. There I was led to a page full of insights. To make it more precise you have the ability to change location and pick a different country depending on where your audience may be. As you scroll down a list of statistics appear. For example ‘81% of TikTok users who made a Back to School purchase said the platform played a role in purchases/gifts bought.’ I have no idea how TikTok gets these types of statistics but then again with stories of the platform and data privacy breaches, we can maybe understand why. Going back to the Facebook video, the copy claimed it had 7,000 new insights and it did not disappoint. Even better, when you click to the website it states there's actually 7,008! You’re spoiled rotten with data now. What makes you even more spoiled for all you savvy data lovers is that you have the option to select a particular audience range. These audiences are separated into Gen-Z, Millennials and Gen X +. The category of Insights then allows you to choose a more niche audience. These range from Advertising, Creator, People, Trust & Safety and more. This then furthers even better into the industry you may be in. I won’t list those because we’ll be here a while and I would like to maintain some of the readers. The 2 final categories are ‘Holidays and Events’ and Year. When it comes to the year the furthest you can look back to is 2020. Great stuff from TikTok!?

Snapchat X AI?
One of the great things about this newsletter is that I get to learn vast amounts of things. In this weeks edition I’ve learnt that Ray tracing is a ‘rendering technique that helps to bring digital assets to life in the environment around them’. This is the AI aspect. The Snapchat aspect is that it's coming to Snapchat Lens Studio. One of the first lens’ to be designed is with Tiffany & Co. I think this is a great partnership in terms of tech. I can’t imagine much of Snapchat’s demographic can afford a Tiffany’s bracelet or ring. I certainly can’t, let alone a 13 year old however the tech side… genius. I’ve discussed many times how great virtual shopping is. Wanting to buy something? Try it on at home before purchase. AR Post suggests that this won’t be the last time we’ll hear about tracing and ‘is likely to be a topic yet again at the upcoming Snap Partner Summit in April.’ It’s a powerful tool in the way of AI and is a breakthrough which I’m sure many of you AI fanatics will be delighted to hear.?

Meta?
I think Meta just wants all their apps to be the same. A new WhatsApp feature from Meta is a status feature that allows for friends and family (or just random people you may have on the messaging service) to be all up to date on what you’re up to. Now that Instagram have the most obnoxious way of letting people know when they’re active, the new notes feature that basically takes up the whole DM section. Well WhatsApp will now have a status that disappears after 24 hours which include photos, gifs, and videos. Sound familiar? Sounds exactly like Instagram stories don’t you think? WhatsApp will be the new Instagram for all the oldies. Meta is getting boring. Come up with something new please. People want to be downloading an app for its USP not to be changing every 2 minutes to experience the exact same features. Won’t be long till we’re watching Reels on WhatsApp. One of the new features I like is the inclusion of link features. It took Instagram forever to add links and now WhatsApp doesn't have to wait as long as we did. What I think we can all collaboratively agree on is that? Instagram needs to make links in a caption usable!! Enough with the CTA’s to look at the bio instead!

In other news, we have something from Pinterest again this week. The platform will now be introducing 5 minute videos in order to improve engagement with the platform's users. The ability for businesses to showcase more work and products within a video is amazing. From research tasks that I’ve been doing for work it seems showcasing products are popular on Pinterest so if your business isn’t on it then I would suggest you move quick and invest in some video production work for your socials! I’m not saying Pinterest will catch up with the likes of TikTok when it comes to video content, however shopping wise I think Pinterest could be in conflict with TikTok. TikTok wants to push for users to shop on the platform more, hence the increase of updates to allow for a more pleasurable user experience. I always think TikTok shopping is a bit spam-like. It’s infiltrated with wanna be influencers who promote everything and anything therefore now I understand the recent trend of de-influencing which I highly recommend you look into if you’re new to the term. Pinterest has over one billion views per day on their video content across the platform? if that can convince you anymore? Let’s hear from Annabel! “I can’t say that I’m an avid Pintrest user myself but I do think a 60 second video length was always going to be limiting for creators and with the success on TikTok, I can only imagine this will be a good move for the platform, allowing for more depth and varied content. The challenge for creators is now to keep the engagement high throughout the longer content and not to get too relaxed with the time limit, as editing content down for maximum interest is still going to be really important to capture and retain audience attention.”???

Opinion of the week:
‘More relationships crumble because of Valentine’s’
On a cheery end to this heavily Valentine’s newsletter I thought it would be best to add an on theme opinion of the week. Valentine's Day. There is such a big stigma that Valentines is such a big celebration and should be celebrated like a regular holiday.? Reminding any singletons, you should be in a couple and putting couples in an awkward position if they’re at breaking stage. I mean what do you write in a card if you’re thinking about breaking up with someone? Eekk. I think the idea of love being celebrated is great but maybe not so much on a commercial aspect. Why do you have to get the biggest card to show your partner you love them? I hate cards. I never do them. Love receiving them but never do them. They literally end up in the bin a week later. £3 I could’ve spent on a coffee for myself. Even better, if you’re with someone who loves coffee (more than coffee addict Lorelai Gilmore) then I’m sure a coffee would mean more to them than a card.??
