I am passionate about this topic, and it irritates me when I see it. I personally work hard to resolve this issue at the companies I have worked for. Though it's unwritten in our industry, it's a "REAL" thing. The solution is simple and starts with leadership. Please read on.

The article from CSO Online highlights the detrimental impact of a "boys' club" mentality on women's success in cybersecurity careers. This exclusionary culture results in women receiving inferior recognition and facing disparities in career advancement opportunities compared to their male counterparts. The study, commissioned by Women in CyberSecurity (WiCyS), emphasizes the significant gap in career advancement opportunities for women in cybersecurity, attributing it to a dominant masculinity culture and a reluctance to accept women as equals. This environment often leads to women being treated with disrespect and assumed to be less competent than their male peers. The WiCyS report, based on a survey of 1,000 employees across more than 20 organizations, underscores the importance of inclusive practices in increasing employee satisfaction and dismantling systematic barriers that have long existed in the cybersecurity industry.
To address and rectify the "boys' club" mentality, it's crucial for Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) to lead by example and actively work towards fostering an inclusive and equitable workplace culture. This issue is indeed surmountable, especially since the propagation of such a culture often stems from the top. CISOs can implement several strategies to promote gender diversity and inclusion:
This treatment and approach to career development and growth is bad for women because it perpetuates a culture of exclusion and undervaluation of women's contributions. It needs to be rectified to create a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture where women can thrive and contribute their talents and perspectives. By taking these steps, CISOs can dismantle the "boys' club" mentality, making the cybersecurity industry more welcoming and accessible to women, thereby enriching the field with diverse perspectives and talents.
