Issue 1: Introduction to The Nuclear Bulletin

Welcome to The Nuclear Bulletin!

It's here, and it's your rundown of news, content, analysis and events in nuclear on a bi-weekly basis.

Let’s get started.

Energy security, supply chain impacts, and climate change issues are continually pressing challenges that have been adding a renewed urgency - including rapid attitude shifts and mindsets, for some - and they all point towards to the need for nuclear energy in the energy mix. The nuclear community have reflected upon this renewed urgency as an opportunity to spearhead a nuclear resurgence - not only de jure, but de facto.

The benefits introduced to the nuclear industry by way of the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) reflect this step-change, by providing production tax credits for existing nuclear power plants and, more importantly, for new nuclear power plants. Specifically,?for advanced reactors and small modular reactors - big news for new nuclear.

Such cost reductions will open up a wide array of nuclear technological innovation, and support those already well on their way to leading the charge for commercialization and deployment of SMRs and advanced reactors across the energy sector.

In today’s bulletin, we’ll share some of the latest news and updates reflecting the growing momentum and pace within the new nuclear industry.

A quick look at recent top nuclear news, straight from the Reuters newsdesk.

  1. A new era for nuclear energy post Inflation Reduction Act

Nuclear power has been pushing electrons onto the U.S. energy grid since 1957, with little fanfare touting its steadfast reliability and carbon free attributes. However, with increasing focus on decarbonization initiatives and an influx of public and private-sector investments, nuclear energy is sharing the stage with wind, solar, and other low-carbon projects as an indispensable asset in the fight against climate change.

2. Could fusion energy help fight climate change?

U.S. scientists announced a breakthrough on fusion energy in mid-December, potentially a step toward one day harnessing the process that fires the sun to generate carbon-free electricity as the world struggles with climate change.

3. X-energy to go public via $2 billion blank-check deal

X-energy has agreed to merge with blank-check firm Ares Acquisition Corporation?in a deal valued at around $2 billion. Founded in 2009, X-energy develops small modular nuclear reactors and fuel technology for clean energy generation.

The deal is expected to generate cash proceeds of about $1 billion for X-energy from the trust account of the special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) Ares, assuming no redemptions. Institutional and strategic investors have also invested or committed $120 million in financing as part of the deal.

With the estimated global market for SMRs reaching up to $300bn p/year by 2040, approximately 70 SMR concepts are currently under development - a 40% increase from 2018.

The race to market for SMRs is well underway and will continue developing full speed ahead in the next few years ahead of net zero targets. After the success of SMR & Advanced Reactor 2022, Reuters Events’ round-up report -?A Robust Outlook for SMRs and Advanced Reactors?- provides the latest insights, analysis and announcements from the market leaders who spoke and attended.

Here’s a sneak-peak of what to expect in the round-up:

  • Expert Insight & Industry Developments?into the challenges and solutions within the nuclear industry with contributions from NEI’s CEO, Maria Korsnick, Ontario Power Generation’s Vice President of New Nuclear, Robin Manley, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman, Christopher Hanson, and The President of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission, Rumina Velshi, amongst other senior level industry leaders.
  • Analysis of Shifting Attitudes: Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), described how three years ago the institute had 30 companies participating in its advanced nuclear program; today that number stands at 76.
  • Announcements from Industry-Leaders?across the nuclear industry. The news last year that PacifiCorp was joining forces with TerraPower to build a next-generation nuclear power plant on the site of one of Wyoming’s retiring coal plants was noted as an example of utility companies prepping for the future: find out what other organisations are doing.
