Can it ever make good business sense to give something away?
The answer is yes. By sharing what you have, it shows that chasing profit is not the be-all-and-end-all. It shows that you care. Take Volvo. When they invented the three-point seat belt they opened up the patent so that any manufacturer could use it in their design. They could have increased short-term profit by keeping the product to themselves, but Volvo is in it for the long-term. That’s why they’ve become synonymous with safety and are such a successful car brand. When you’re trying to build a business, generosity may not appear high on your agenda. But it should. More than ever consumers, employees, stakeholders and suppliers are looking at not just what companies make, but how they behave. Humanising business is key to what we do, ensuring people are not forgotten in the pursuit of profit.
