Issue 08: Level Up: New Skills Unlocked

Best Wishes, Warmest Regards

Have you seen an email signature get icy? If so, this may be a warning sign for you HR peeps that all is not well in paradise. Seemingly harmless “Warmest Regards” sign-offs are now changing to “Cold or Mean Regards." This playful disregard may be one surface example of discontentment between employees and employers.

But regardless of what (unhinged) email sign-off they’re choosing, employees are looking for more than just on-the-job training and 57 percent of employees are pursuing training outside of work.?Contrary to what’s been talked about all year, there’s a growing skills gap that isn’t just a delay in learning a new technology.

On the surface, it sounds great that these employees are being proactive and advocating for themselves. After all, these go-getters are attaining certifications to upskill on their own time and these are the employees you want to keep on board.?But that's not the case.

Nearly half of employees reported that they DON’T feel they have what they need from their employer to build the skills they need for the future. That’s not new news but with a global talent shortage that reached a 17 year high and employers reporting difficulty hiring skilled talent, there’s clearly a mismatch.?

Here are a few suggestions to make sure your employees’ new talents don’t help them find another job:

  • Figure out what they’re excelling at and help integrate these new skills into their regular work
  • Consider internal promotions and management roles (lateral moves are great, too!)
  • Invite them to lead a workshop or Lunch-n-Learn

Here are five other ideas to get started.?

We Need to Talk About Mental Health and Motherhood

As we near the end of Suicide Prevention and Awareness Month, we wanted to bring awareness to the realities of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders (PMADs). PMADs is an umbrella term for postpartum depression, anxiety, OCD, and psychosis, which affect 1 in 5 new mothers and 1 in 10 new fathers. But unfortunately, most PMADs are underdiagnosed and undertreated. Currently, suicide accounts for up to 20% of postpartum deaths, and is a leading cause of maternal death in the first year following childbirth.?

To better support new parents throughout the entire leave process, the Parento Program provides unlimited parent coaching and PMAD screening to ensure that new parents can get the help they need during this critical time in their lives. As our expert coaches build relationships with parents, they actively talk about the risks of PMADs and what to do if the parent is experiencing any emotional complications. By introducing the topic early, it reduces fears and stigmas, encourages frank communication, and provides baseline data.?

Level up your onboarding with gamification

Who said that gaming was NSFW OR only for hip new startups? Employee expectations and learning styles are changing, which is why we love how this HR leader at Ware2Go revamped their onboarding program by gamifying the experience. Not only did this new program score extra points by acting on employee feedback, but they also expanded the onboarding activities to involve multiple departments. Hello side quests!??

We think that gamifying the onboarding experience is an innovative approach because being a new hire can be overwhelming and confusing. On top of information overload, there’s nothing worse than finding yourself at a dead end not knowing what to do - especially if you’re a remote employee. Remember: 30% of employees quit within the first 90 days.

Gamification can help you level up your onboarding and motivate employees - think quizzes, points, leaderboards, or even a scavenger hunt.?What else can you gamify?

Even if you automate the paperwork and processes, how are you connecting your new hires to your culture? Gamification doesn’t have to be complicated, but it may be the future for interactive HR.

Last chance to register for the webinar on 9/28!?

In just a few days, livingHR, Inc. and Parento will be sharing how companies can unlock engagement and retention flywheels by adding employee coaching. Even if you can’t make it, register today and get the recording to watch later!???

Best wishes, warmest regards!
