The first Gleneagles urban outpost opens in Edinburgh, a buzzy new hotel lands in Ibiza Old Town, and a grown-up reincarnation of Ace Hotel arrives in Shoreditch. Plus, a luxurious new safari lodge from andBeyond and the first-ever hotel from global restaurant brand Estiatorio Milos.

andBeyond Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge | Opening 6th June 2022

TANZANIA: “One of East Africa’s best safari destinations is getting an upgrade” (Architectural Digest ) next week with the reopening of the Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge. Having originally opened back in the ‘90s, the lodge flooded when the banks of the Grumeti River burst in 2020. Now, “conservation-led luxury travel company” (Travel and Leisure ) andBeyond have taken the opportunity to rebuild it completely and “relaunch it as a sustainable new lodge” (Robb Report ) that “brings guests even closer to the incredible landscape” (Architectural Digest ). The guest suites have been expanded and now boast “more stylish and contemporary interiors” (Robb Report ) as well as soaking tubs and plunge pools - the perfect spot “from which to watch the bathing hippos” (Robb Report ).

Gleneagles Townhouse | Opening 6th June 2022

SCOTLAND: One of “the biggest hotel openings of the year” (Vogue ), the much-anticipated Gleneagles Townhouse opens this Monday. “Swapping golfing greens for the city” (National Geographic ) it will be the “first urban outpost” (National Geographic ) of the historic country estate, opening in a listed building on St Andrew Square that was once home to the British Linen Company. The 33-room townhouse will be a hotel and members’ club with a rooftop bar and “extensive gym and wellness facilities” (Robb Report ) open exclusively to members and hotel guests. Many of the building’s original features, “from its ornate facade to the tiles and cornicing” (National Geographic ), have been preserved and the central hall “with glass-domed ceiling and grandiose Roman columns” (The Guardian ) will play host to the hotel’s public bar and restaurant.

One Hundred Shoreditch | Opened March 2022

ENGLAND: “The hipster hotel that grew up” (Financial Times ), One Hundred Shoreditch is “a reincarnation of London’s Ace Hotel” (Financial Times ) - one of the surprise permanent closures during the coronavirus pandemic. The hotel reflects a new era for the once “gritty late-night party” (Conde Nast Traveller ) neighbourhood that today “has a smarter feel to it” (Conde Nast Traveller ). “In the interest of reducing waste” (Dezeen ) a number of materials and features from the old hotel have been utilised while the neutral bedrooms have been created as “pockets of tranquillity” (Conde Nast Traveller ) offering “a retreat from the vibrancy and energy of the surrounding area” (Design Milk ). The hotel is home to three bars, a coffee shop and a restaurant, and the lobby that once saw creative types “plucking away at MacBooks every hour of the day and night”, “still has a buzz about it” (Financial Times ).

The Standard, Ibiza | Opened April 2022

SPAIN: One of Europe’s “buzziest new hotels” (Vogue ) has just landed “slap bang in the thick of Ibiza Town” (Conde Nast Traveller ). The “box-fresh hotel” (Conde Nast Traveller ) is the latest outpost from The Standard Hotels and follows suit with the brand’s cool credentials, opening in a sleek all-white former movie theatre “steps away from the waterfront” (Vogue ). Inside, “the scheme celebrates the resurgence of energy” (Sleeper ) that once attracted so many to the White Isle with a design that takes “cues from 1960s bohemian design” (Dezeen ). The rooftop terrace is perhaps “the loveliest spot for a sundowner in Ibiza Town” (Conde Nast Traveller ) while other highlights include a 15-metre swimming pool and a Mediterranean restaurant offering “a farm-to-table menu” (Evening Standard ).

Xenodocheio Milos | Opened January 2022

GREECE: Xenodocheio Milos “quietly opened” (New York Post ) in January, “but now as summer approaches” the hotel “is finally ready to shine” (New York Post ). The hotel “is the first of its kind” (Sleeper ) from chef Costas Spiliadis and his global restaurant brand Estiatorio Milos, which has outposts all around the world “from?London and?Los Cabos?to New York and Montreal” (Elite Traveler ). Housed in “two heritage-listed neoclassical buildings” (New York Post ) in downtown Athens, the 43-room hotel embraces “the neo-classical bones of the original structure” (Hotel Designs ) with “imposing columns” and “sculptural artworks” (Elite Traveler ). Unsurprisingly, “the cuisine is a highlight of any stay” (New York Post ) with globally-renowned Milos dishes available in both the restaurant and your room.
