ISRO's Chandrayan-3 last X minutes of Terror

India Space Research Organization (ISRO's) Moon project Mission Chandrayaan-3 is at the final step of meeting its objectives

• To demonstrate Safe and Soft Landing on Lunar Surface
• To demonstrate Rover roving on the moon and
• To conduct in-situ scientific experiments

As Countdown for Chandrayaan 3 descend on moon has begun, before deep dive into understanding the Last X minutes of terror , Lets try to know a bit details about modules and its requirements for soft landing

Two Module Configuration

• Propulsion Module (Carries Lander from launch injection to Lunar orbit)
• Lander Module (Rover is accommodated inside the Lander).

The Lander Module (VIKRAM) and Rover Module (PRAGYAN) module's component level information are provided in above attached images.

Chandrayaan-3 Mission has 3 Crtical phases

• Lander Propulsion Module Seperation ==> Successfully completed
• Lander Deboost ==> Successfully completed
• Lander Touchdown ===>

So the last X minutes of terror was referred to Lander touchdown phase as the challenges in the environment termed as known unknown's or unknown unknowns behaviour , The Key here is how effective below components work for soft landing.

1. Lander module sensor

• (Lander Position Detection Camera (LPDC)
• LHDAC (Lander Hazard Detection & Avoidance Camera)
• Laser Altimeter (LASA)
• Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV)
• Lander Horizontal Velocity Camera (LHVC)
• Micro Star sensor
• Inclinometer & Touchdown sensors

1. Lander actuators( Reaction wheels – 4 nos (10 Nms & 0.1 Nm))
2. Lander propulsion systems payloads (Related to Engines control)
3. Lander mechanisms (realted to lander leg , rover antennas )

I wish and pray for soft landing so that rover will be able to execute all planned payloads to collect the data for Mission's Life i.e 1 Lunar day (~14 earth days).
