What is Aadhaar masking?

The masking process masks the first eight digits of the Aadhaar number used as ID evidence on the application form, leaving the last four digits unmasked.

Other demographic information, such as name, date of birth, gender, address, and QR code, remains unchanged. Before being permanently stored in a database system, the data is digitally validated and disguised by the competent authority UIDAI at the time of collection.

Why is Aadhaar masking necessary?

The master guidance on KYC criteria was revised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)?in May 2019. As part of this update, the RBI mandated that all regulated institutions mask the Aadhaar numbers of their customers.

UIDAI introduced the Masked Aadhaar ID in response to the elevated risk of information misuse by offering an additional layer of security. Where the Aadhaar number is not required, a masked ID can be used for eKYC because just the last four digits are visible.
