Isolation - The silent struggle of business leaders

Do you ever feel like you talk to people all day long, yet somehow still feel pretty isolated?
It’s a super common experience and one that I don’t think gets talked about very much.
Isolation can manifest in various forms like the loneliness that comes with high-stakes decision-making or feeling of being adrift without a supportive network.?
It is also interesting because although talking to a partner/spouse can be helpful, most often they can’t really relate unless they are also a business owner.
The relentless pursuit of success sometimes leads us down a path where we inadvertently distance ourselves from the very connections that could provide valuable insights, advice, and emotional support.
Even if we are talking to people much of the day, those conversations are usually you supporting others.
You are leading your team.
You are making new connections.
You are strategically planning.
You are putting out fires.
But very few of those conversations are pouring into you.
Right??
When was the last time during your workday someone asked “how are you doing” and really meant it?
So what can you do about it?
Here are a few things I’ve found in working with my clients to be most useful:
1. Prioritize time in the week for yourself.
Wait, am I suggesting that you create more alone time for yourself? Maybe, yes.
Time that is for you (you get to decide what you do - maybe you do nothing) is very different from being “on” talking to people and working.
Sometimes feeling isolated is actually just low energy because you are constantly giving to others without giving to yourself.

2. Be intentional about community
It’s really easy to be the lone wolf charging ahead, and often sacrifices need to be made. Skipping parties or gatherings because work needs to be done.?
I get it.
But there are some things you can still do that would decrease the feeling of isolation.
Coffee with a friend.
A walk with your partner.
Playdate with your kids.
Whatever that looks like for you. PLAN IT. Put it on the calendar. Being intentional will ensure you create the community you want most.
3. Build a support network
Who do you most need in your corner?
Is it a mentor in your industry? A counselor/therapist? A business coach? A high performance coach? A mastermind? Accountability partner?
Actively seek out people to support and push you to continue growing.
Isolation may seem like an inherent part of the entrepreneurial journey, but it doesn't have to be a burden.
You can make small changes starting today that will have a significant impact on your quality of life.
You are not alone.
Wishing you success and meaningful connections on your entrepreneurial journey.
