SGS Certification Solutions
Enabling risk mitigation and operational efficiency with management systems standards
ISO/IEC 42001 (artificial intelligence management system, or AIMS) has been published, and the EU has agreed the world’s first comprehensive AI rules. ?
AI is developing and being adopted rapidly in many industries, products and services. Undoubtedly, AI is influencing, and will further influence, society and our lives.
Due to this progress and influence, trust, ethics and social concerns must be addressed. AI must be reliable, fair and transparent – it must be trustworthy.
ISO/IEC 42001 provides a certifiable AIMS framework in which AI systems can be developed and deployed as part of an AI assurance ecosystem.
The global standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an AIMS.
The goal is to help organizations and society benefit the most from AI while reassuring stakeholders that systems are being developed and used responsibly.
Who is ISO/IEC 42001 for?
Any organization or professional looking to implement AI safely.
Because AI systems are complex, implementing an AIMS requires a truly multidisciplinary approach. Depending on the use case, this may include legal, privacy, operations, marketing, R&D, sales, HR, IT and risk managers.
What are ISO/IEC 42001’s main benefits?
ISO/IEC 42001 certification follows successful completion of an audit and enables you to:

To implement an AIMS, you will need a solid understanding of ISO/IEC 42001's requirements. We have training to provide the required knowledge.
Once the system is in place, we can offer a gap assessment. After the successful completion of an audit, we will issue your certificate, confirming the effective implementation of the standard's requirements.
An audit against ISO/IEC 42001 from SGS will help your organization stand out from the crowd by supporting you to develop and improve performance.
The EU agrees the world’s first comprehensive AI legislation
The EU recently reached a provisional decision on the world’s first comprehensive AI legislation. After 36 hours of discussions, negotiators agreed on the rules concerning AI in systems like ChatGPT and facial recognition.
The European Parliament will vote on the historic EU AI Act proposals in early 2024. But related legislation will not come into effect until at least 2025.
The Act includes safeguards on AI use in the EU and limitations on its adoption by law enforcement agencies. Consumers could also launch complaints and fines enforced upon organizations breaching the rules.
EU Commissioner Thierry Breton called the EU AI Act “historic”, providing “clear rules for the use of AI”. He added that it was “much more than a rulebook”, rather “a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race”.
The US, UK and China are expected to publish their own guidelines shortly.
