ISOCL - results of the 1st qualifier
The International Schools Online Chess League (ISOCL) Spring Season 2023 kicked off with the first qualifier tournament held on 24 March. The tournament witnessed the participation of 36 international and bilingual schools in China mainland and Hong Kong. 5 new schools joined as well: Wycombe Abbey Nanjing, Shekou International School Shenzhen, German School Beijing, Tungwah Wenzel International School Dongguan, and Beanstalk International Bilingual School Beijing (Shunyi Campus). A new record was set with 236 participants.
After a series of intense and thrilling matches, ISOCL's partner school Wellington College International Shanghai emerged as the champion of the first qualifier tournament. The team displayed exceptional skills, strategic moves, and a remarkable team effort throughout the tournament.
The runner-up of the tournament was a team from Shekou International School Shenzhen and the third placer was Dehong Chinese International School Shanghai.?
The score of the top 4 players on each school team are added up to a total team score in each Qualifier. The total team score from each Qualifier adds up to determine which school teams qualify for the Final Six.

The?tournament was a great success, providing a platform for students from different schools to showcase their skills and engage in healthy competition. The ISOCL is an excellent initiative that provides a unique opportunity for students to compete and learn from one another, promoting sportsmanship and teamwork.
Noteworthy is a staggering total of 1562 games were played. Wellington College International Shanghai and German School Shanghai fielded in the most number of players with 24 players in each team.?
Master Rafal conducted a zoom session before the tournament. He provided technical support to the participants and explained Fair Play rules and Arena tournaments. Anti-cheating measures were put into effect.?Lichess uses a powerful chess engine, like Stockfish to monitor all the games. If a certain percentage of the moves played by a player are identical to the engine's top choice, or if the mean error made by a player compared to Stockfish is very low, the player is automatically flagged as a probable cheater. a Players marked for violation of Terms of Services may appeal: lichess.org/appeal.
Accounts are marked by a software, which sometimes can go wrong. If players disagree with it, they have a right to appeal, and the appeal will be reviewed by professional moderators. If a player agrees with the ban, it is still recommended to appeal on the appeal page and accept it, which will provide the player an opportunity to play again in the future (which otherwise is not allowed).
We are sure we will see more exciting matches and fierce competition among the participating teams. New school teams?and new students from the existing school teams are welcome to join in the 2nd qualifier on 28 April. It will be interesting to see which teams will qualify for the Final Six Tournament to be held on 16 June, and which school team emerges as the champion of the ISOCL Spring Season 2023.
