Key Requirements for Facilities Providing ISO 23678:2022 Training and Services
In this article, I will explore the essential features a facility must have to deliver training and services under the ISO 23678:2022 standard.
Equipment Requirements
As outlined in ISO 23678:2022 Part 1, Annex B and Section 5.4 (Equipment), training facilities are required to have specific equipment, such as:
This equipment is crucial for various stages of Initial-Level I and Level II training programs, directly impacting the certification of service engineers. For example, Initial training includes theoretical and practical content on off-load release hooks, while Level I expands to cover other types and applications.
Recommendation: Facilities should aim to provide as many brands, models, and types of equipment as possible. The more diverse the exposure, the greater the safety awareness and preparedness of service engineers in real-world maritime operations.
Infrastructure and Facility Suitability
The facility must meet infrastructure and space requirements to conduct hands-on training. For instance, it should accommodate:
These capabilities enable not only theoretical learning but also scenario-based and case study training, ensuring engineers fully understand the curriculum and its applications.
Trainer Qualifications
According to ISO 23678:2022 Part 1, Section 5.2.2, trainers must meet specific qualifications. Trainers are required to:

Certification Process: How It Works
The certification process involves the following steps:
Typically, the process takes 6–7 months, depending on the region, facility, and surveyor. Upon successful completion, certification is granted.
Beyond Certification
With the implementation of ISO 23678:2022 Part 3, the standard's application is fully established. However, this is just the beginning.
I plan to address other Parts over time as new developments and demands arise.
Looking Ahead: Human Factors in ISO 23678:2022
Did you know that annual and five-year inspections aboard ships are conducted by certified service engineers?
What if I told you ISO 23678:2022 also provides a framework to address human factors, minimize human error, and enhance safety culture?
Stay tuned for Part 4, where I’ll delve into the intersection of ISO 23678:2022 and human factors, offering a fresh perspective on safety in the maritime industry.
