ISO 9001:2015- An HR Perspective

Are you interested in learning how to improve your quality management system (QMS) and ensure that your people have the right competence for their roles?

If so, you might want to check out the ISO 9001:2015 standard, which provides some useful guidelines and requirements for the HR function. In this post, I will share with you some of the key clauses related to the HR function in the ISO 9001:2015 standard and how they can help you achieve your quality objectives.

The ISO 9001:2015 standard has two main sub-clauses related to HR function:?

  • clause 7.1.2 People?
  • clause 7.2 Competence.

Clause 7.1.2 (People): It states that you need to provide adequate resources for your quality management system (QMS), including people who can perform their roles effectively and efficiently.

Clause 7.2 (Competence): This clause provides a four-step process for ensuring people have the necessary knowledge and skills for their roles:

  • Determine the competence requirements for each role
  • Ensure that people meet these requirements or take actions to acquire them
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of these actions
  • Retain appropriate evidence of competence

Some possible quality objectives for the HR department under this standard are:

  • To identify and address all training needs in the QMS
  • To measure and monitor training effectiveness
  • To maintain necessary documents for competence evidence

As an auditor, you always look for evidence of competence when you audit the HR function of your organization. You want to see how the organization determines, provides, evaluates, and retains the competence of its people for its QMS. You also want to see how the organization monitors and improves its HR processes and procedures to ensure compliance with the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

If you want to learn more about the ISO 9001:2015 standard and how it can benefit your organization, you can visit the official website of ISO or contact me for further assistance. Remember, the HR function is not only about hiring and firing people, but also about developing and maintaining their competence for your QMS. By following the clauses related to the HR function in the ISO 9001:2015 standard, you can ensure that your people are capable and confident in performing their roles and delivering quality results.

Thanks for sharing AbdurRahman. Indeed HR has a very important role to play in QMS. One of the good ways " o determine the competence requirement for each role" is by having an updated Job Description for each role
