ISO 59000 Standards Demystify Circular Economy
During World Circular Economy Forum 2023 in Helsinki, I heard one of the Speakers from the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) say that there are currently “200 different definitions and ways of explaining Circular Economy”. ?
If a term has so many definitions how can anyone develop a shared and common understanding among leaders, managers and staff in an organisation? With varying interpretations, it further compounds the problem of establishing #measurements for measuring and monitoring progress towards #circularity.
Similarly, with the flood of information on Circular Economy, mostly in bits and pieces and spread across many knowledge bases, frameworks, regulations, models, etc., leaders and sustainability professionals are wondering where to start. What road map to take to transition from linear to Circular Economy.
The recent release of three out of the five planned international standards on Circular Economy, ISO 59000, has brought great relief, clarity and guidance for interested organisations to implement and institutionalize Circular Economy in a planned and systematic manner while bringing consensus on the complex topic.
It was a joy to read ISO 59004 and 59020 standards, learn from them and make sense of it all.
Great work done by International Organization for Standardization (ISO) ISO Technical Committee TC323, under leadership of Hans Kr?der , Catherine Chevauché . Thank you so much.
