Back in 2015 the updated version of ISO 14001 – the International Environmental Management Standard was released. The newer version included a fresher approach and consideration of the strategic direction of the business, leadership and commitment as well as focusing on life cycle analysis and opportunities. This update was overdue, the days of ISO 14001 just being a tick box exercise are now long gone. The pressing matters of sustainability including climate change adaptation and mitigation, circular economy, net biodiversity gain, species extinction and single use plastics to name a few are at the forefront of most environmental managers minds. The appreciation of how damaging supply chains can be in respect of human rights abuses has also risen up the ranks in recent years, with a stronger focus on ethical audits and assurance programmes linked to life cycles in ISO 14001.
An Environmental Manager or Sustainability Manager today has lot more on their agendas then back in 2015. Therefore, it is important that they are supported by a team that knows and understands how the standard works, what the benefits are and how they can practically implement the Plan, Do, Check and Act clauses with confidence.
For many people when reading through any International Standard for the first time it is usually met with fear and anticipation; “how are we going to demonstrate this?” normally springs to mind. As a framework to support the continual improvement of your environmental management and protection of the environment ISO 14001, a bite sized chunks approach is recommended. This is where Crowberry Consulting new online training courses hosted by Teachable can support you. We have over 20 years of implementing ISO standards for the environment and sustainability. Our Foundation and Introduction course is designed to help you to understand how the clauses of the standard “talk to each other”. More importantly the training introduces the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how you can link these through to your environmental objectives, targets and action plans.
Even in the last five years the tools and techniques designed to help Environmental and Sustainability Managers have evolved. The saying of “if you cannot measure you cannot manage” has never been truer, with the strong focus now on carbon foot printing and green house gas reduction, measuring your emissions is now a key metric in business. ISO 14001 can support this journey towards net carbon zero by establishing baselines, setting realistic targets and training your teams on this key environmental aspect.
With the onset of the covid19 pandemic many people in 2020 are now choosing to work from home, this means the option to gain training and knowledge from online sources is now more important then ever.
