Isn’t it Time You Had a Grown-Up Playdate?
?
Nothing is more joyous than the sound of children playing. Their laughter and
uninhibited screams of happiness bring us back to a simpler time when life was all about having fun and enjoying ourselves. Just because we grow up doesn’t mean we have to give up play, though. As George Bernard Shaw said, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”
The Benefits of Play:
In childhood, play helps us learn how to be creative and nurtures critical thinking and
personality development. Those same benefits can enhance our life experiences,
professions, relationships, and family lives as adults as well. Play can boost your energy and vitality and even improve your resistance to disease, helping you function at your best. Other benefits include:
Reduces stress: The play has been shown to release endorphins, the body’s natural. feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain.
Improves brain function: Proving Shaw’s point, studies show that play improves memory and stimulates the growth of the cerebral cortex. Play also triggers the secretion of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a substance essential for the growth of brain cells. Stimulates the mind and boosts creativity. Young children often learn best when they are playing, and that principle applies to adults as well. We learn new tasks better when we are in a relaxed and playful mood. Play can also stimulate our imaginations and help us adapt and solve problems.
Improves relationships and your connection to others: Sharing laughter and fun can foster empathy, compassion, trust, and intimacy with others. Play doesn’t have to include a specific activity; it can also be a state of mind.
Being playful can help you break the ice with strangers, make new friends and form new business relationships. It’s Never Too Late to Have a Happy Childhood!
As adults, it is easy for us to get very set on who we are and the types of activities we do and do not like. But knowing the many benefits of play, isn’t it worth taking the time to find new activities that we can enjoy for adult playdates?
