What's taking you so long to find your next job?

Chances are you don't know why your job search is taking longer than you thought it would. You're applying to plenty of jobs. You're applying to the right jobs. So you probably can't quite put your finger on what's not working.

But when your job search is taking longer than you'd like, you end up having 3 choices:

1. Keep On Doing What You've Been Doing And Hope You Get Lucky: Do you really think that's going to make your job search faster. If you were going to get lucky, wouldn't that have already happened by now? (BTW, Most job seekers who get lucky in their search, get lucky in the first month).
2. Apply To A Higher Volume Of Jobs: This strategy assumes that higher volume will overcome poor search execution. In reality, you're doing more of what's not working, hoping for different results.
3. Change Your Search Strategy: Changing your search strategy is the most effective way to accelerate your job search, because change is hard. And job search seems so uncomfortable for most, that you feel comfort in doing what everyone else is doing. But that means that you look like everyone else to employers, and when you try to differentiate yourself, it's not working (because you're still doing the same things as everyone else). Comfort slows your job search.

When you don't know what to change, it likely makes you even more uncomfortable, scaring you about making changes. That fear causes job search inertia, so you keep doing what you've been doing or just send more resumes. You can see in #1 and #2 above why this isn't working well for you.

If your career coach, outplacement firm, or professional resume writer hasn't given you advice that worked to make your search faster, then it's time for a change. The reasons why their advice hasn't helped is because they all took the same training for the same certification tests, teaching them to coach you in the same way as everyone else.
