Since I was a teenager, I have had a wide and more peculiar array of job positions. At 33 years old, I have had over 14 different positions, almost all of which have been in a different industry. From being a waitress (multiple places), a bartender, a lifeguard, a floral designer, and a photographer, to a yacht stewardess, a private nanny, an autism support teacher, and an ESL teacher in Namibia with the Peace Corps. Now, currently settling in an accounting and finance recruiting role, I have had what is now known as a non-linear career path.?
A non-linear career path is explained as a set of positions that follow an "unconventional" trajectory. It can include a wide range of jobs and experiences, in all different industries. It doesn't follow one particular path; instead, it constantly evolves. A few major benefits of this type of career path are broadening knowledge, self-awareness, self-development, a diverse skillset, increased flexibility, adaptability, and career contentment.?
While it may not be traditional, I completely support and condone a non-linear career path, such as mine. I believe I have reaped all the benefits, especially a diverse skillset and my adaptability to ever changing environments. I have learned more about myself, I have obtained a lengthy list of skills, I have seen so much of the world, and I have met some of the most interesting and impressive people. I plan to continue my career path in such a way, as I make my way through the world, learning as much as I can and gaining irreplaceable knowledge through experiences. Therefore, my advice for college graduates or anyone feeling wary about what career path to commit to, don’t. Try something and if you change your mind, remember change is?always?a good thing, even if you feel uncertain.?
