Islands of Innovation - H'awaii, Puerto Rico, Samoa, Marshall
Hawaii has been awarded more grants than Alaska, despite graduating fewer STEM graduates. Sensing and photonics as well as ocean-based innovations are part of the mix.
Islands of Innovation is part of the "every state has inventors" section of my state-of-innovation series. Since the state of the Federal program to support small company innovation, Hawaiian companies have been awarded 900+ grants. Alaska has won just over 100, with Puerto Rico weighing in at 53, American Samoa 1 and the Marshall Islands 1.
Reading your mind, I'm going to cover American Samoa and the Marshall Islands first.
HAMR INDUSTRIES LLC of State College, AS was awarded an STTR in 2018 to develop IP from Penn State. The grant was titled A Novel Cold Spray Method for Repair and Mitigation of Cracks in Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Canisters.
Aquaculture Technologies of the Marshall Islands was awarded an SBIR in 2019 for Fish Feeds: Creating a Sustainable Model of Agriculture in the Marshall Islands.
Puerto Rico has manufacturing, so innovation makes sense there even though it has a small population. Hawaii does seem to punch above its weight at 914 grants as of Feb, 2024. Innovative Hawaiian companies include:
