WILL THERE BE A FISHERIES BREXIT DEAL? - There is increasing concern that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is attempting to exclude fisheries from any trade deal with the European Union when Britain exits at the end of the year. Political requirements to deliver on promises made to areas where the Conservative government wants to maximise electoral advantage could be a motivating force. There are indications that Johnson wants to exclude fisheries from any trade deal. The EU has insisted that they must be included and Ireland, for whom an agreement for continued access to UK waters is vital, is heavily dependent on this approach. Mackerel and Prawns are particularly important, with estimates that as much as 40 per cent of Irish catches of these species come from what would be regarded as British waters if there is no deal. The EU maintains that Britain will need a deal to continue to export fish catches to Europe and that, without it, there would not be sufficient marketing opportunities for the catches of their fleet. There is a further complication in that there are considerable numbers of Spanish-owned fishing vessels registered as British. How they will be dealt with is not clear. British negotiators are understood to have indicated to EU counterparts that there is confidence in the UK that they would find markets for all their fleet’s catches. However, no resolution has been indicated for the issue of non-British owned fishing boats registered in the UK.

Shipping analysis has also indicated that the demand for tankers for storage has fallen sharply as indications of economic and industrial re-opening increase. US shipping reports say there is an increase in booking of tankers to export U.S. crude oil from the Gulf Coast and suggest demand for oil supplies is "edging up from slump" as countries begin opening up economies from coronavirus effects
