Islamic Worldview (5): The Central Role of Returning to Our Creator in Islam’s Educational System

In the previous articles, we discussed how Islam aims to nurture the "righteous human" and guide him or her to be a true representative of Allah on Earth. To achieve this, Islam establishes a direct and unimpeded relationship between human beings and their Creator. It does not place barriers between them, allowing for an intimate connection that lies at the heart of its teachings and educational framework.

The Qur'an reminds us of our inherent connection to Allah from the very beginning of our existence:

"O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, who created you, then formed you and balanced you? In whatever form He willed, He put you together." (Qur'an 82:6-8)
"O mankind, indeed you are laboring toward your Lord with [great] exertion and will meet it." (Qur'an 84:6)
"And We have certainly created man, and We know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein." (Qur'an 50:16)

This return to the Creator is the very essence of Islamic creed, and it forms the foundation of the Islamic educational method. From it flows every regulation, directive, and guideline, and through it, human life can proceed according to the correct and balanced course.

1. Turning Back to the Creator: Recognition of His Power

When humans return to their Creator, they recognize that He alone holds ultimate power and control over all things. Allah is the owner of everything on earth and in the heavens:

"To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth." (Qur'an 36:83)

This understanding shifts people's reliance away from anyone or anything other than Allah. They no longer worship or seek help from earthly powers or idols but instead direct their hearts and efforts toward Him. This brings spiritual liberation, freeing them to act with purpose and conviction in life.

2. Guided by His Light: The Path of Righteousness

As humans reconnect with their Creator, they also begin to follow His guidance. They embrace His path and make it the foundation of their lives, choosing it over any other worldly guidance or ideology. This brings inner peace and external harmony, as the Qur'an beautifully explains:

"And if guidance comes to you from Me, then whoever follows My guidance will not go astray and will not be unhappy." (Qur'an 20:123)

This clear and direct path leads to righteous lives filled with meaning, structure, and fulfillment.

3. Empowered by Divine Strength: The Source of True Power

When individuals turn to Allah, they draw from a source of strength that transcends any earthly power. Their efforts are fueled by the will and strength of Allah, who has granted them the ability to shape the world around them. The Qur'an states:

"And He has made subject to you whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, all by His grace." (Qur'an 45:13)

This divine empowerment encourages people to strive with determination, overcoming obstacles, and achieving their goals without feeling helpless or defeated. They know that their abilities come from Allah, so they continue to push forward with perseverance.

4. The Beginning and the End: The Creator as the Source of Life and Destiny

Humans are reminded that their existence originates from Allah’s divine will, and their ultimate return is to Him. This understanding puts life into perspective and directs people's actions toward their Creator, knowing that everything they do in this world will eventually lead them back to Him:

"He is the One who created you from a single soul..." (Qur'an 4:1)
"Indeed, to Us is their return." (Qur'an 53:42)

This recognition encourages a mindset of accountability, knowing that one's actions in this life will have consequences in the Hereafter.

5. A Shared Humanity: A Common Bond Among All People

Finally, Islam teaches that all humans share a common origin. We are all created by Allah from the same soul, and this establishes a sense of unity and brotherhood among us. The Qur'an says:

"O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women." (Qur'an 4:1)

This connection emphasizes the importance of cooperation, love, and mutual respect. When people truly understand that we all share the same origin, it fosters compassion and removes barriers that divide us—be they racial, national, or social.

Conclusion: Returning to the Creator as the Foundation of the Islamic System

Through these five fundamental principles, Islam ensures that individuals live with a profound awareness of their Creator. Returning to Allah provides guidance, strength, purpose, and unity, leading to a balanced and meaningful life. By embracing this return, humans can rise to their true potential and fulfill their purpose as representatives of Allah on Earth. This is the essence of the Islamic way of life—one that fosters peace, purpose, and prosperity both in this world and the next.
