Is iSCSI an Obsolete Technology
Circa 2008 I joined Massachusetts based IT Start-up EqualLogic on their quest to re-introduce iSCSI as an industry standard storage protocol across the data center space. Suffice-to-say an uphill battle contending with the presumed Fibre Channel standard and the typical challenges of an IT Start-up (e.g., name recognition (or lack thereof), concern about longevity of the organization, etc.).
Fast forward to 2012/13 and EqualLogic was acquired by Dell Inc. (now Dell Technologies) for a record-setting (IT acquisition of a Start-up) $1.2B (‘B’ = Billion).
That began my world-wide journey to expound the technical and financial advantages of iSCSI in the modern data center.
iSCSI (Internet Small Computer System Interface) is a network protocol that allows data to be transferred over IP networks, it's not considered a dead technology. While it's true that iSCSI has been around for quite some time and has been overshadowed by newer technologies in recent years, it is still widely used in many environments.
iSCSI is a cost-effective solution for storage networking, it allows organizations to use existing IP networks for storage traffic, this makes it easy to deploy and manage. iSCSI can be used for a wide range of applications, including data backup and recovery, disaster recovery, and remote data access. It's also supported by most major operating systems and hypervisors, making it a versatile option.

iSCSI is especially useful in small and medium-sized businesses, and in cases where Fibre Channel (FC) is not an option because of budget or infrastructure constraints. Additionally, iSCSI allows for the use of low-cost Ethernet storage devices and switches, making it a more cost-effective option than Fibre Channel in some cases.
In summary, iSCSI is not a dead technology, it's still widely used and has its own niche in the storage industry. While newer technologies such as NVMe over Fabric and Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) may be more popular in some cases, iSCSI continues to be a reliable and cost-effective option for many organizations.

7 个月Is this refering to iscsi and serial storage architecture? This was my area of expertise in 2001, A surprise to see it alive today

1 年Good brief on iSCSI but for the record of correction. EqualLogic was originated in Nashua, New Hampshire, not Massachusetts. Although they are just a few miles from the Mass border, there are not based out of the state of Massachusetts.

2 年Would about big companies still running AS/400. It's worthless at this point. There excuse I always hear is it's a stable system. I've used it for about 20 yrs
