The IRS E-file system for accepting electronically filed individual tax returns shutdown begins on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time.
The e-file system shuts down to allow the IRS IT team to prepare the system for the upcoming Tax Year 2023 Filing Season. This happens every year and is standard procedure.
Why is this relevant to the taxpayer?
If a taxpayer has the need to file a tax return during the shutdown, they will need to paper file via (snail) mail.
It still may be a good idea to not send via snail mail but instead to wait and e-file when the IRS opens its system back up.
Here are some reasons why E-file is preferable to mailing a tax return:
1. By far much faster to get your return processed for a refund. Mailed-in returns can be backed up extensively.
2. E-file is more secure with security guidelines and encryption technology
3. With E-file the taxpayer does not have the hassle to print, sign, and mail out.
4. Peace of mind with confirmation of acceptance of your tax return within minutes
