IRS E-File and Payment Systems are Down....

Well isn't this just great? TODAY is tax day, and the IRS E-file system is not working!

Here's the message we get when we try to E-file client returns: System Outage The MeF System is currently down. We are working this as a priority. Current System Status: Production System: Non-Operational Assurance Testing System (ATS): Non-Operational We are also told that many clients trying to make payments today for taxes due, may also get a system outage notice....

Our understanding (via Washington Post article) is if IRS is unable to bring these systems back online today, taxpayers will not be penalized for failing to file their returns or make payments by the April 17th deadlines. How IRS would manage this is unknown.
