IronViz - A data story in 20 minutes

TC21 (Tableau Conference 21) with the IronViz competition wrapped up a few weeks ago.

For those not familiar, IronViz is the final round of Tableau's annual data visualization contest. The 3 finalists are given a common data set. They then have 20 minutes to come up with a visualization and the story to go with it. (Note - Some prep work seems to be done ahead of time but the actual work within Tableau is done in those 20 minutes)

The dataset for the competition was from Chartmetric with around 200 million records about music artists over several years - including their popularity, YouTube listening stats, and Shazam stats.

This year's competition featured the first candidate from the Asia-Pacific region - Pradeep Kumar G (Tamil Nadu, India). He represented the music discovery trends between solo and group artists. The sea of blue on the map didn't make anything stand out, but it indicated solo male artists were the top discovered artists from each country. Clicking on any artist origin area or country showed the top discovered artists for that region. (Dashboard link)

Samuel Parsons (UK) picked 8 artists who got into the Top 100 to show how Shazam data (driven by social media) preceded their popularity on music streaming services. There were effects applied to slowly reveal additional layers of information - a new feature from Tableau. Figuring out where to click for interactivity was making the dashboard a bit challenging. Lisa Trescott (CA, US) (the winner) narrowed down the data even further to 3 artists to show their surge in popularity from 2020. The page animation to show the glowing dots expanding globally was a visual treat. The dashboard had a very clear storyline so further exploration was minimal. (Dashboard link)

Overall, the contestants did a wonderful demonstration of what can be accomplished in just 20 minutes. Each of them also had a unique approach to tell the story they attempted to visualize. A very good learning experience indeed. Looking forward to see them explore the process further in the upcoming If Data Could Talk series.
