IRONMAN LESSONS LEARNED TO DRIVE SALES

IRONMAN LESSONS LEARNED TO DRIVE SALES

How can you truly know the limits of what you can achieve until you test yourself? No matter what you think the odds are, they’re always greater if you don’t try. In the same vein, those same odds drop in your favor as soon as you set out to try something. The major obstacle to overcoming any odds is never challenging them.

To me, that’s what becoming an Ironman is all about. It’s more than a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile swim and 26.2 mile marathon run – without a break. It’s really not even all about crossing the finish line or beating the competition. Becoming an Ironman is about perseverance, overcoming the odds, pushing the boundaries of what you thought that you could ever do, digging deep down and pulling out a personal victory that will stay with you for a lifetime. It takes a certain attitude and commitment, goal-setting, measurement and practice. That’s why I love to use it as an analogy for sales. In fact, I love it so much I made it my Twitter handle, @IronmanJack.

I’ve put together a list to share my experience. Here are the Top 10 Ironman Lessons Learned to Drive Sales:

1) Attitude is central to success! 50% or more of success at anything in life is a head case.

2) Push yourself! Make yourself get up and go out in the field and make those face-to-face calls!

3) You need a goal in writing so the vision is clear!

4) Make a game-plan and hold yourself accountable to achieving the goal.

5) Develop a system of measurement to make sure you are doing what you need to do!

6) Model the Masters! It's better to learn from others how to avoid mistakes than to learn from your own mistakes.

7) Seek out a coach who teaches effective and efficient habits.

8) You need training and practice, an abundance of both!

9) No one wins alone, you need a dedicated and loyal support team!

10) You need to stay fit if you want to stay in the game.

I had no idea how much Ironman would change my life until I embarked on the journey.

Pushing beyond what we can do should be an everyday experience, yet it's not for most of us. If we are honest with ourselves, I think we know when we are treading water with our most important relationships and in our careers. That feeling of being in "neutral" is my signal to shift and move forward, to take on the next challenge. When it comes to physical challenges, riding my first century on the bike, actually 106 miles in just under 6 hours, was more mental then physical. Your body is telling you to stop, take a break and rest, call you family to come pick you up.Instead if we stay focused on achieving the goal we can move past the pain into accomplishment. Just finished reading "Hyper Sales Growth." Thank you for writing a great book and for challenging us all to do more!

Limiting beliefs can stop you from getting off first base, knowing how to push through them is key, a good coach or mentor will certainly make it easier. Having said that an Ironman is something incredible to achieve.
