Irish Luck or Hard Work?

With St. Patrick's Day approaching, the "luck of the Irish" is probably a saying you've heard before. If you thought the meaning is related to the extreme good fortune of the people of Ireland, think again. According to Edward T. O’Donnell, an Associate Professor of History at Holy Cross College and author of "1001 Things Everyone Should Know About Irish American History," the term is not Irish in origin. "During the gold and silver rush years in the second half of the 19th century, a number of the most famous and successful miners were of Irish and Irish-American birth. Over time, this association of the Irish with mining fortunes led to the expression 'luck of the Irish.' However, if anyone has watched any program on mining, you know that it's more than good luck. Results come from hard work, commitment and resilience.
Just like public procurement! How's that for a transition...smiles? Okay, let me explain! Public Procurement is a tough job...one the hardest, best jobs that I ever had in my 20+ years of government. But to become good at this profession - it takes work, commitment and resilience. Hard work in keeping up with the growing organizational demands, maintaining certifications and training, and contributing a value proposition. Commitment to really care about the integrity of the process, the careful spending of taxpayer dollars, and wisely managing resources. Resilience to not bend to political demands or outside pressure to cut corners when others want things to go faster. Maybe our "mines" aren't full of gold and silver, however a reputation for integrity and good character is what we have to show for our efforts. And there's no "luck" in that legacy.
I had the great opportunity to visit Ireland last summer - beautiful country and hospitable people. Whether you are of Irish descent or not, wishing you a Happy St. Patrick's Day AND Happy Procurement Month!
