Irish Grocery Inflation Down 16% From Last Year – Kantar

Irish grocery inflation rose 3.7% in the 12 weeks to 17 March, down 16% compared to March last year according to the latest figures from Kantar.

The marketing researcher reported that take home grocery sales rose 4.5% in the 4 weeks to 17 March, with €1.1 billion running though the tolls.

Shoppers spent €47.8 million more in take-home grocery compared to the same period last year.

However, increased shopping value is more so due to price increases than volumes, as the average price per pack rose 4% and volumes per trip fell 1.2%.

Lidl Ladies National Football League Urges Families To ‘Get Behind The Fight’

Lidl Ireland and the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) have urged families to ‘Get Behind The Fight’ and attend the Lidl Ladies National Football League finals this weekend.

The retailer and organisation are gearing up for an action-packed weekend of National Football League Finals across four divisions with special deals on tickets.

The campaign aims to fill every seat at the matches after research by Lidl found that a staggering 59% of Irish people have never attended a live women’s sporting event.

This figure is especially shocking as the survey also found that 42% stated an interest in attending and 74% think it is a shame more people don’t attend.

Deposit Return Scheme Surpasses 20 Million Drinks Containers Collected

Over 20 million drinks containers have been collected in Ireland since the launch of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) on 1 February.

The milestone was reached on 29 March, when 1.2 million containers were returned in a single day, the highest so far.

This surge in collections has indicated to Re-turn – the organisation implementing the scheme – the public’s increased participation and support of the DRS.

Re-turn’s benchmarking of collections helps the organisation measure the success of the scheme compared to other European countries.

Slovakia, which implemented a return scheme in January 2022, collected 264,000 containers in its first month. Ireland collected 2 million in the same time frame.

2024 European Private Label Awards – Winners Announced

The winners have been announced for the 2024 European Private Label Awards, organised by ESM: European Supermarket Magazine.

Retailers from Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Central and Eastern Europe have been named among the winners.

A total of 68 product innovations were whittled down to a total of 21 winners across 17 core categories, as well as four ‘Best of the Best’ categories.

Ireland's BWG Foods/Spar Ireland was recognised as a finalist in the Meat & Seafood category for its Inishella rib-eye steak.
