Irish Angel & P.O.P.P.A
Upon my trip to NYC, I met with the Irish Angel NYC team. To say I have an awesome Buch of Angels is an understatement. One of which is my very dear friend and Irish Angel Advisor NYPD Inspector Steven Mauriello. Steven also is on the board of P.O.P.P.A, (Police Organization Providing Peer Support Assistance)
P.O.P.P.A are an awesome organization that not only helps those officers in service, but also those who have retired. I had the pleasure of meeting with P.O.P.P.A Director John Petrullo. John, Steven and I where on the same page across the board on how we see things within the mental health, addiction and PTS field. Our passions where matched when it came to how we see things and want to help those in crisis. The one amazing thing that stood out to me, again because it is something as many of you know I have worked on and cared about for the longest time and that is, retirees. The work that P.O.P.P.A does to make sure that those that have served in the past are not forgotten about is outstanding. We simply can not forget about someone who that puts in 20/30 yrs to the job.
Retiring is not as simple or as rewarding as you might think. It can bring on a whole world of emotions, by simply having to much time to think. For many it can be the unraveling of the layers that have been built up for the longest time, coupled by the emotions of no longer being a part of the "family" any more and feeling like they have no purpose. I must applaud these John and the team for the work they do for those who have served as well as those that are still in service. It truly is remarkable and many agencies could learn a lot from the work P.O.P.P.A do.
