The Irascible Stock Picker

Since ancient times, across cultures 'Crows' have often been referred to as bad omens. Although in Hindu mythology, they are still venerated as our ancestors but only on the Amāvásyā (the lunar phase of the new moon in Sanskrit). With changing times, they have graduated to being identified as a nuisance by the urban chic. But ever wondered why a group of crows is called a "murder" and not a "flock"? Poetic injustice?

Contrary to our cultural beliefs, the reality is that 'Crows' are only one of the four species that can craft tools. The other three are humans, orangutans, chimpanzees. ?Their brain to body ratio is even bigger than humans.?Humans are just about beginning to recognize their impressive intelligence and cooperative social behaviors. Yet calling someone a crow isn't a compliment? Unfair isn’t it?

"The only thing that makes life unfair is the delusion that it should be fair."
Steve Maraboli

Trying to untangle the 'Crow' imagery? This perception was based on a lot of factors including your judgement.??Processing only took a fraction of a second.?And yet when someone builds a perception of us, it makes us uncomfortable.?Human nature, eh?

However unfair, perception is the reality of life.?I learnt this from Ginger, the irascible stock picker and her bête noire Leo.?Many a time, their perspectives on the same stock are diametrically opposite – Ginger is buying for potential growth, while Leo is selling because of poor performance or vice versa.??Assuming both have done their groundwork, despite the opposing views, should they go ahead? Isn’t it a test of their own convictions?

Now apply this principle of diametrically opposite views to perception. When someone has a view of you that does not match up to your own, what should you do??Most of us fall into the trap of undermining ourselves.?Yes, it is important to reflect, but it is more important to believe in yourself first.?Like Ginger & Leo, you need to back your own convictions.??You expect others to believe in you when yourself don’t?

?"Life is 10 percent what you make it, and 90 percent how you take it."
Irving Berlin

Will you always be right? Heck no! A normal distribution implies that people will think positively about you 50% of the times.?Many people will still not have a positive view of you.?Learn to live with it.?Believe me, Ginger would die for being correct more than 50% of the times.??And because she does, she gets to be the irascible stock picker that we so often envy.?

The information on crows is quite fascinating. The perception conundrum is such a huge trap but as you said we are all humans.

Navneet Jhamb Ginormous surprise !!!!! The very first writing on stock picking I have seen that didn’t contain a single lecture on the subject and of course that secret ‘system’ they have discovered to CROW about….yawn !!!! So far so good. Then the point got across with sledgehammer intensity and gentle sentences that are woven so complexly, that reading them is a ‘Gingerly’ activity. Much like reading backward!!!! LEO kar lo baat !!! So, I read between the lines as well and did a juxta on Maraboli which in Hindi sounds like a stock bidding cry ‘ Mara – Boli’. !!! The visuals are irascible as well…the Rooster (Cock if you will) primes you to expect ‘to make an omelet.’ and all that and suddenly it is all about CROWS….made me swipe up and reconfirm the bird…and finally concluded that “The COCK was CROW-ING very little “ eh? So, all in all, it was funky and what I got out of it is that Market Research is Cock & Crow, I have it under the authority of a certain columnist – Jhund. One needs to believe in oneself rather than others’ perceptions.
