Iraq to build elevated metro in central region

Iraq is planning to build an elevated metro between its two central cities of Karbala and Najaf and has approached a Chinese company to conduct a study on the project, an Iraqi news network reported on Wednesday.

Iraqi’s Transport Minister Kazim Finjan discussed the project in Baghdad on Tuesday with a delegation from the China North Industries Corp (Norinco), which is involved in the manufacturing of vehicles, machinery, oilfield equipment and other products.

“The minister reached an agreement with Norinco to conduct on a preliminary study,” Sumeria News said, citing a statement by the Transport Ministry.

The statement said the Chinese firm would sign a memorandum of understanding with the ministry for the study after visiting the project site shortly.

Norinco executives said they are willing to “undertake the project on a post-payment basis,” according to the statement.

Why go above ground? Saddam had built miles and miles of tunnels as part of a subway project begun in 1983. -- According to Donald Rumsfeld. https://www.globalsecurity.org/org/news/2003/030409-tunnels01.htm The tunnel infrastructure should still be there :)
