Iran’s Order of Chaos
How the Islamic Republic Is Remaking the Middle East
On Friday, Israel was bracing for an attack by Iran or its proxies after Tehran vowed to retaliate for an Israeli airstrike that killed senior Iranian commanders in Syria on April 1. Although the tit-for-tat strikes are the latest in a long-running shadow war between the two countries, the risk for miscalculation and escalation continue to grow.
“Over the decades, Iran and its proxies have developed keen instincts for calibrating risk,” writes Suzanne Maloney. “Now, having gauged the waning American interest in the Middle East, Iranian leaders see an advantage to be gained by gambling.” Maloney outlines what the Biden administration must do—and quickly—to prevent Tehran from exploiting the war in Gaza to further its own ambitions.

10 个月The destabilizing actor in the Middle East is not Iran, it is the USA and its proxy, Israel. It is the US’ desire for domination of this region, vital for resources and transport routes, that drives US foreign policy. This is justified by the US as the “indispensable nation” and guarantor of the “rules-based international order.” Unfortunately for the wannabe world hegemon, this justification and the policies it supports is coming apart as we watch Israel’s genocidal attack on Gaza, its defiance of the ICJ and the UNSC, and it’s attacks on Lebanon, Syria and the Iranian embassy, all with the material and diplomatic support of the USA.
