Iran’s Caspian shores, Green Valleys and Forests
One would be excused to think of Iran as an arid land with mystical deserts and bleak mountains, this image has been perpetuated for centuries by travelers and writers who have not fully explored our divers and geographically varied land.
Fertile, green and covered in temperate forests and woodlands, the Caspian shore line offers a different world. This lush terrain to the north of the magnificent Alborz mountain range contrasts deeply with the rest of Iran.
The three provinces of Gilan, Mazandaran and Golestan hug the lower Caspian basin from west to east. The combination of the sea air and the protection of the mountain range has created a distinctive climatic condition. These provinces are blessed with endless greenery, are fertile and offer breathtaking natural scenery.
Rice paddies, tea plantations, citrus orchards, livestock pastures and ancient towns and new settlements sit within easy reach of the blue sea and emerald green forests of the mountains and the hills.
The traveler is treated to unique natural scenery and experiences the hospitality of the people with their distinct languages and dialects and cuisine.
Gilan’s attractions abound. The highlands of Roodbar offer olive groves, Lahijan’s hilly tea plantations soothe the soul and then there is the historic city of Rasht, one of UNESCO’s Creative Cities for its gastronomy.
Further east is the ancient province of Mazandaran with thousands of years of history with destinations such as Ramsar hot springs, the picturesque Javaher Deh and the stunning Kelardasht.
Golestan, is the third of these provinces, transcending the Torkaman Sahra prairies and the Caspian shores it has something for everyone. One of the best places in Iran to enjoy horse trekking and bird watching, it is a vast province with dramatic skies, beautiful ancient forests and a collection of historic buildings and sites to rival anywhere in Iran.

7 年Been in Iran last March and HIGHLY NOT recommend Anzali, the Caspian and the Lagoon are so polluted, birds are competing with rubbish, plastics of every sort and sizes and fast passing boats to survive !! East Azerbaijan was generally more polluted and dirty than the other regions, such a pity!!
