The crash: President Raisi's helicopter lost contact about 30 minutes into the flight to Tabriz, prompting a massive search operation .
Who is Raisi? Ebrahim Raisi, a hardline and religiously conservative politician, was elected president in 2021 after initially losing in 2017.?Raisi's career began at the Qom religious seminary at 15, and he quickly rose through the judiciary, becoming Tehran's prosecutor in 1989 .
Who is celebrating and why? Multiple accounts claim that there were celebrations in Iran overnight following the chopper crash as people considered him the most brutal of the rulers.?Here’s why he is hated in Iran .
However, there are also counterviews claiming that Tehran was in mourning .?
Is Israel behind the crash? Given the longstanding animosity between Iran and Israel, some Iranians speculate that Israeli involvement may have been there, particularly in light of recent escalations in the Gaza conflict, including the?assassination of an Iranian general in Damascus followed by Iran's retaliation.
Nevertheless, experts deem Israeli involvement improbable, as it would likely provoke a severe Iranian response and is outside Israel's traditional strategic focus, which centres more on military and nuclear targets rather than high-profile political figures.
What next? The bigger question is about the role of the Supreme Leader because the President's role is largely limited to domestic affairs.
The big picture: Ebrahim Raisi's death could cause oil market volatility and potential supply disruptions , impacting global prices. Gold prices have surged due to geopolitical uncertainty.
