Currently, there have been approximately ten weeks of protest in Iran, which began over the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in September. The morality police arrested Amini because her clothing – a hijab and skinny jeans – were deemed inappropriate and violated Iranian dress policies for women. She was beaten by police and struck in the head, eventually passing away after being transferred to a nearby hospital.
As a result of the protests, the Attorney General of Iran said they would abolish the morality police. However, this news has been denied by some state media. It is being reported that the law on wearing the hijab is under review, and there could be a decision in the next couple of weeks. Until that point, protests are likely to continue with associated violence, and a large demonstration is planned for the 14th?of December.
While the protests have been going on, Iran has been supplying Russia with drones and ammunition for the war in Ukraine. Russia is reportedly seeking to increase cooperation with the Iranian military. Iran’s response to the protests domestically and its support for Russia is increasing political tension generally, reducing the likelihood of a nuclear deal with the country.
There are also reports that Iran is weeks away from being able to produce enough enriched uranium to produce a nuclear weapon. The U.S. has said there is no intelligence to suggest that Iran will attempt to build a nuclear bomb. However, this increases the risk of a military confrontation between Iran and Israel, which may carry out some further sabotage against Iran’s nuclear program or more conventional military strikes or the U.S.
