Iran-Afghan rail to begin operations next year

The Iran-Afghanistan rail connecting both the countries is set to become operational next year.

Railway official, Hossein Ashouri, was quoted as saying that the railroad to Afghanistan will become operational in the coming Iranian year (to begin 21 March), according to Mehr News Agency.

Ashouri, deputy head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railway Company for operation affairs, said that the rail project has reached the border of Afghanistan.

The rest of the project, which has been developed in Afghanistan, is expected to be completed by the end of the upcoming year.

The official added that “infrastructure has been completed in the Afghan side though pavement lines need to be constructed”.

“Of the two rail blocks which are being built, the foundations of one is 50% [complete] while the other one is 25% complete,” he added.
