IR Career Starters - March 2025
Alexander Borum
Special Advisor @ Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark | EU/AU Africa Relations | AU Peace Support Operations
It is March, and once again, it is time for a new edition of the IR Career Starters Newsletter. The job market remains in turmoil after the US's disengagement from global humanitarian and development assistance. Opportunities remain, but repercussions will be felt for the foreseeable future.
Last edition, many of you voted on my poll on what content would be helpful to you (results are below). It is pretty clear that there are many of you who are interested in more content, so now it's time to tell me what topics I need to pick up and either talk about or write about!
Please comment on Substack or LinkedIn with whatever topics you want me to address!
In other, more personal news, I have just started a new position with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark. A career in diplomacy can be incredibly challenging to achieve, and with a handful of attempts behind me, I am naturally excited to have secured my dream job; a permanent position in the diplomatic core but I cannot promise that these new responsibilities wont impact my commitments; I will try my best to strike a balance and naturally, I promise that the newsletter will continue as it has.
Lastly, I want to give a big thanks to the people who have decided to support the newsletter financially. As it stands now, the voluntary paid subscribers can almost cover the entire costs of hosting and domain for the year, and because of that, I would shift the focus onto charity rather than lining my own pocket.
In the past, I have garnered much support for causes in Afghanistan, Somalia, Syria and in global demining. Still, in light of recent events, I would strongly suggest that you support the defence of Ukraine, as they continue to face unfettered Russian aggression.
As always, the newsletter and all my content are free to access, so there has never been any distinction between paid and free subscribers. The main thing is that the content reaches the people who need it, so comments, likes, and shares are the universal currency I pursue.
However, if anyone wants to pay, I recommend that they support Ukraine instead of me; thanks to current supporters, this is almost a cost-free operation at this stage.
All the best, Alex
