In our last edition, we explained the benefits to retailers of having a two-way radio system in place, Today, we address a growing trend: the implementation of body cameras in supermarkets like Tesco and others. This surge is a direct response to reports of rising violence against staff.

A Cause for Concern

Recent statistics paint a worrying picture, According to The Grocer reports of violence and aggression towards supermarket staff have risen 50% in the last year alone. These incidents can range from verbal abuse and shoplifting altercations to physical assaults. This alarming trend has understandably placed employee safety at the forefront of supermarket security concerns.

The Rise of Body Cameras

Enter body cameras. These wearable devices capture video and audio recordings, providing irrefutable evidence of interactions between staff and customers, their growing presence in high street supermarkets suggests a potential solution.

The very presence of a body camera can act as a deterrent to the potential aggressor, knowing their actions are being recorded may discourage outbursts and de-escalate situations.

In the unfortunate event of an incident, body camera footage provides concrete evidence for investigations and potential legal proceedings, this can provide crucial support for staff who have been subjected to violence or abuse and help in the prosecution of repeat offenders.

Body cameras can also foster increased trust and transparency between staff and customers, watermarked footage can be used to review disputed incidents objectively, helping to resolve misunderstandings.

Buyer Beware

While body cameras hold promise, not all body cameras are created equal. Here's why a careful approach is crucial:

  • Legal Ramifications: Ensure your body camera system complies with local and national data privacy regulations. Cheap, poorly designed cameras may capture footage deemed inadmissible in court due to privacy violations.
  • Data Integrity: Corrupted data is useless evidence. Invest in body camera systems with robust data security protocols and reliable storage solutions. Low-quality cameras may have frequent data corruption issues.
  • Technical Limitations: Consider factors like battery life, video quality, and audio clarity. Subpar cameras may have inadequate battery life, blurry or low-resolution video, or muffled audio, hindering accurate incident reconstruction.
