Ipsos | ESG: A difference of opinion?

2024 represents a significant electoral year globally with about 49% of?world's population heading to the polls . But, are climate change?and social inequality priorities for voters??Are we seeing a divided opinion on ESG?

Whilst 43% of the world’s population are very concerned about climate change ?and almost a third (30%) even claim to feel anxious about it, this does not necessarily translate to it being a priority for governments or businesses with inflation remaining the top concern globally . We also see generational divides in the UK in opinions concerning masculinity and women's equality .

But despite differing opinions we explore the reputational ?and commercial value for businesses and institutions in getting ESG right.

Generational views on gender equality

Young women are much more likely than any other group to think 'toxic masculinity' is a helpful term, and are more pessimistic about the prospect of future progress on gender equality.

Research from King’s College London and Ipsos, revealed a significant gender divide among young people concerning masculinity and women's equality.

Whilst almost half (48%) of the UK public believe it's harder to be a woman today, the largest gender gap observed was among young people. The study also discovered that young men are less positive about feminism's impact and,?when asked to look ahead 20 years, 30% of young men believe it will be harder to be a man, while 48% of young women think it will be harder to be a woman. A third of people dispute the human origins of climate change

43% of the world’s population are very concerned about climate change - admittedly not a majority, but this is still a very substantial proportion, one that did not change between 2022 and 2023.

The fifth annual global opinion study on climate change from EDF, with Ipsos, reveals that 80% of respondents think that the climate phenomena occurring in their country are?increasingly being caused or worsened by climate change. Read the paper

Inflation concern is finally easing, echoing slowing price rises?globally

36% currently think inflation is still a top concern across 29 countries – though concern has now eased for the third month in a row.

With the economic outlook now clearer, but not necessarily less challenging than it was a year ago, inflation remains the number one global concern for the 22nd consecutive month. However, this is the third month in a row concern for inflation has fallen. Read the paper
