IPL 2024 New Rules: Bouncer, Smart Replay, Wides and Catches Know All about

IPL 2024 New Rules: Bouncer, Smart Replay, Wides and Catches Know All about

The 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is scheduled to begin on Friday, March 22, and the fan excitement is at an all-time high. The season opener between the Chennai Super Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore takes place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk. There are two new regulations this year, and it will be interesting to watch how they improve the thrilling league.

Over the years, a number of rules have been introduced ahead of an IPL season. Last year, the introduction of the Impact Player rule was a hit, as teams had the advantage of bringing in a player midway through a match to bolster their side. This year, the Impact Player rule has been retained, and a couple of new rules have been added.

Second Bouncer Rule in IPL 2024

  • Two Bouncers Per Over: Bowlers are limited to two short-pitched deliveries per over that pass or could pass above the batter's shoulder.
  • Wides and No Balls: Deliveries above the batter's head that prevent a normal shot are called wides and count towards the bouncer limit. Exceeding the limit results in no balls.
  • Warnings and Suspension: Bowlers exceeding the bouncer limit will be cautioned, receive a final warning, and then be suspended from bowling for the innings.
  • Over Completion: A suspended bowler's over will be completed by another bowler.
  • Match Referee Reporting: The umpire may report incidents to the IPL Match Referee for further action against the bowler.

No stop clock rule in IPL 2024

The teams will still be allowed to examine two balls in addition to wides and no balls, which was included as a feature last year. But since the IPL decided not to implement the stop time rule, there will be a noticeable change from the most current ICC playing conditions. This decision, which will not be applied in the IPL, was made permanent for white-ball international matches with the intention of ensuring fast proceedings.

IPL Introduces Smart Replay System for Enhanced Umpire Decision-Making

The IPL has implemented a new 'Smart Replay System' to revolutionize review calls. Here's how it works:

  • High-Speed Camera Network: Eight Hawk-Eye cameras strategically placed around the stadium provide real-time footage to the TV umpire.
  • Direct Umpire Access: Eliminating the broadcast director intermediary, the umpire now receives visuals directly from Hawk-Eye operators, offering split-screen views and multiple angles for faster, more accurate decisions.
  • Improved Analysis: The comprehensive data stream enables more informed analysis than ever before.
  • Transparency for Viewers: Fans will understand the reasoning behind DRS calls, enhancing engagement.
