Six mega-trends that shape China's businesses | IPChina Weekend

Welcome to the IPChina Weekend Edition! As a weekend relaxation and apart from IP, I am trying to share some general-interest knowledge about China, and hope you may find it interesting and/or useful.

In today's newsletter:

  1. Six mega-trends that shape China's businesses
  2. Three China quotes you can use at work or in life

1. Six Mega-Trends for China's Businesses

I recently came across an insightful book on Amazon entitled "The One Hour China Book ". It's a short and easy-to-read book, as the title suggests. However, if you find yourself pressed for time as a busy manager, the central theme of this book can be distilled into one sentence:

There are six mega-trends that shape China's businesses in the last four decades, and will continue to guide the China economy going forward in the foreseeable future.?

Here are the six mega-trends:

  • Mega-Trend #1: Urbanization
  • Mega-Trend #2: Huge Manufacturing Scale
  • Mega-Trend #3: Rising Chinese Consumers
  • Mega-Trend #4: Money - And Lots of It
  • Mega-Trend #5: The Brain Power Behemoth
  • Mega-Trend #6: The Chinese Internet

(Note: I think the title of mega-trend #4 is eye-catching but not informative. A longer version is "A banking and financial ecosystem that is moving large amounts of capital throughout China with increasing efficiency and sophistication" in the book.)

No matter if you are new to China or a veteran of doing business there, moments of feeling overwhelmed are common. I think there are three reasons for this:

Firstly, China is big, really big. Its land is bigger than Europe (Russia excluded), its market size is enormous, and its population... (well, I admit that India has overtaken China on that since April 2023, but still...).

Secondly, China is changing so fast. Shenzhen city is a classical example, growing from a fishing village to a mega-city in twenty years.

Thirdly, China is very different. It has a rich culture and history distinct from Western civilization. Its inter-winded socialist and capitalist economy is perplexing to the rest of the world.

Despite the above complexities, you will get much more clarity on what's going on in China's businesses if you bear the above six mega-trends in mind. They underpin countless China stories that get reported every day. They are the fundamental drivers of why and how money is flowing within and through China.?

2. Three China quotes you can use at work or in life

A lot of entrepreneurs don’t make it in the end, not because they don’t have money, but because they have too much money. When you try to solve problems with money, that is when your real problems start.

?— Jack Ma, Founder of Alibaba, speech at Stanford University, June 19, 2013

~~~
The Master said, "Is it not pleasant to learn with a constant perseverance and application?"
"Is it not pleasant to have friends coming from distant quarters?"
"Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him?"
— The Analects of Confucius
~~~

Man at his birth is supple and weak; at his death, firm and strong. (So it is with) all things. Trees and plants, in their early growth, are soft and brittle; at their death, dry and withered.
Thus it is that firmness and strength are the concomitants of death; softness and weakness, the concomitants of life.
Hence he who (relies on) the strength of his forces does not conquer; and a tree which is strong will fill the out-stretched arms, (and thereby invites the feller.)
Therefore the place of what is firm and strong is below, and that of what is soft and weak is above.

— Tao Te Ching, Lao Zi
