IPCC's Sixth Assessment Report published - response from WSP's David Symons

This week, the?latest report?from the United Nations’?Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change?(IPCC) gave the clearest indication to date of how climate change could affect the lives of billions of people on Earth.

It made clear that any further delays in slowing climate change and adapting to its impacts puts a liveable and sustainable future at risk.

Read the below response from David Symons, UK Director of Sustainability at WSP, about this stark warning.

David said: “The IPCC's latest report published today is a very positive development and we welcome the practical focus on resilience and adaptation measures to tackle climate change. Rightly much emphasis is often placed on climate mitigation and decarbonisation to limit the future impact of our changing climate, but there is much the UK needs to be doing now.?

“The effects of climate change through extreme weather events and a devastating decline in biodiversity are already being felt by communities across the country, and we need to build our resilience and adapt to those changes which are already baked in and unavoidable.

“Three specific recommendations are for UK buildings, railways and power infrastructure to be designed for future weather; for business to carry out strong climate risk assessments too; and for cities to have a comprehensive funding plan to implement strong climate action. Resilient infrastructure and economies are required to support our communities and the places where they live and work from the effects of climate change today, not in decades to come.

“Addressing climate change is a priority for world security and equality.?Already, developed countries have made commitments to the Green Climate Fund which need to be implemented in full, and there are many lessons already available.?Bangladesh’s investments in storm defences, cyclone shelters and floating farms is one, and New York’s investments after 2014’s Hurricane Sandy another. We must look to how future ready solutions are being used today as guide to how we are to become resilient to climate change in the years to come.”
