IPCC – it’s not too late…yet

Yesterday, the IPCC Working Group published the 3rd part of its 6th assessment report, Climate Change 2022, with a call to cohesive and collaborative global action.?This report focused on the Mitigation of Climate Change, but was clear that global emissions need to have peaked by 2025.?We have previously highlighted the cumulative and compounding nature of climate action and inaction, and welcome a reiteration of the urgency to reach an emissions peak as soon as possible.

The 2nd report published in February focused on climate change impact [read here] and adaptation had already warned us of the clear future negative impacts, while this report notes we are still not on track for 1.5 degrees despite some progress in global climate actions.?Immediate and deep emission reductions across all sectors are needed now, to not only limited global warming but also ensure sustainable development.?The current policies are leading us to ~3.2 degrees.?Yet, there is still great potential for mitigation through solutions and technologies.

The 1.5 degree target requires emissions to fall 45% by 2030 and unsurprisingly it notes the need to rapidly phase out fossil fuels, accelerate renewable energy and increase energy efficiency and conservation.?It notes the risk of significant fossil fuel assets being stranded - USD1-4 trillion for a 2 degree scenario and even higher for 1.5 degrees.

This is the first IPCC report to provide a detailed assessment of how human behaviour, choices and consumption can directly contribute to climate change mitigation.?

It outlines mitigation measures for sectors like energy, transport and construction, in managing urban and city areas, land use, consumption efficiency and reduction and lastly offset or capture mechanisms like cardon dioxide removal.

It is the time to invest in the future with current investment estimated to be 16-33% of where it needs to be for 1.5 and 2.0 degrees respectively.?This requires a co-ordinated and consistent approach across all governments in terms of policies (e.g. removal of fossil fuel subsidies), cohesion on future energy mix and investment in efficiency, capture and offset solutions.
