Oct 18 announcements

On Oct 18, 2022, Apple announced 3 new products and 1 new accessory:

  • the M2 iPad Pro
  • the 10th-gen iPad
  • the 3rd-gen Apple TV 4K
  • the Smart Keyboard Folio for the iPad 10

No big event, just a bunch of press releases and a presentation video?shared on YouTube .

At the same time, they increased the price of the iPad Mini by about 18% in Europe. Yikes!

In addition to getting the M2 chip, the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pros can now record ProRes video and can sense the tip of the Apple Pencil when it's hovering a few millimetres above the screen.

This new feature is called "Apple Pencil Hover" and can be useful for artists who'd like to preview stuff before touching the screen.

Apart from that, they can now connect over Wi-Fi 6E which can be about 50% faster than Wi-Fi 6, provided that your Wi-Fi access point supports it.

They can be pre-ordered right now and will start being delivered after Oct 24th.

Here's the price list for the Wi-Fi-only models compiled from Apple's website on Oct 21, 2022, for the US store (in USD before tax) and the Luxembourg store (in EUR incl. VAT):

For the Wi-Fi + Cellular model, just add 200 to the price regardless of the currency.

In my opinion, there isn't any compelling reason to upgrade from an M1 iPad Pro unless it's the primary device that helps you generate your income.

It took Apple twelve years to finally ditch the home button on the iPad.

Yes, the "base model" iPad now closely resembles its cousins: the iPad Air and the 11-inch iPad Pro.

Gone is the lightning connector, replaced by a USB-C port and like for the iPad Air, Touch ID has moved to the Sleep/Wake button.

Unlike the iPad Air, the new 10th-gen iPad is?only compatible with?the?1st-gen Apple Pencil.

Since the Apple Pencil 1 has a lightning connector to pair with the iPad, a Lightning-to-USB-C adapter will be required.

People who buy this Apple Pencil now will get the adapter for free but those who already own a 1st-gen Apple Pencil will need to pay $9 (+tax) or 10€ (incl. VAT) to pair it with this new iPad.

Alongside Wi-FI 6 and Bluetooth 5, this new iPad is equipped with the A14 Bionic chip (the same as the iPhone 12) and the cellular model comes with 5G.

There is still something truly unique about the iPad 10: it's the first to have a?front-facing camera on the longer edge?of the body.

Since most people do video conferencing with the iPad in landscape orientation, it will feel more natural and closer to what we're accustomed to using a laptop.

And it comes in 3 vibrant colours (yellow, pink and blue) in addition to the traditional silver option.

The downside of all of this is that the price has gone up significantly compared to the previous generation.

In fact, Apple is keeping the 9th-gen iPad in its store at the same price as when it was launched a year ago.

Here's the price list compiled from Apple's website on Oct 21, 2022, for the US store (in USD before tax) and the Luxembourg store (in EUR incl. VAT):

Unless you intend to only do emails and browse the web with this iPad, I recommend opting for the 256 GB model.

And if you intend to take a lot of handwritten notes or draw or sketch with an Apple Pencil, then I recommend going straight to the iPad Air.

Indeed, the iPad Air is compatible with the 2nd-gen Apple Pencil which attaches and recharges itself magnetically on the side of the iPad.

No need for adapters and no worries that the Apple Pencil might be discharged.

As you'll see in the graph below, if you have a budget of around $599 (+tax) or 760€ (incl. VAT), you have the choice between a 256 GB iPad 10 and the 64 GB iPad Air 5:

Wi-Fi only prices for the iPad line in the US Apple Store on 21-oct-22

And if you have a budget of about $480, then you might get better served with the 256 GB iPad 9 rather than the new iPad 10 in 64 GB, unless you crave pink, yellow or blue in your tech life ???

?? Apple TV 4K

In case you didn't know, the Apple TV is not an actual television but rather a small box running tvOS, a stripped-down version of iOS, the operating system running on your iPhone.

After plugging the Apple TV into your television via an HDMI cable, you'll have access to the TV, Music, Arcade, Fitness, and Photos apps and through the App Store, you'll be able to download third-party apps, like Netflix, and Disney+ as well as many games.

And since tvOS 13, it's even possible to connect Xbox, PlayStation, or other Bluetooth game controllers to the Apple TV, making it a worth-considering alternative, at least for casual gaming.

In my household, the Apple TV is the only game console in operation using both a PlayStation 5 Wireless controller and an Xbox Series X Wireless controller so that two people can play simultaneously.

Well, on Oct 18, Apple refreshed the Apple TV 4K by fitting it with the A15 Bionic chip (the same as in the iPhone 14).

As a consequence, it can now support HDR10+ video format making it compatible with 7.1 multi-speaker systems.

Two models are available:

  • A 64GB model only with Wi-Fi and HDMI
  • A 128GB model with Ethernet, Wi-Fi and HDMI

This means that the 32 GB is no longer sold and the maximum capacity has doubled, which is more than welcome as my 64 GB Apple TV HD got saturated pretty quickly with games.

From the outside, this new Apple TV 4K is about 12% thinner and about 50% lighter than the previous generation simply because Apple removed the fan.

And best of all, the price is going down too:

  • The 64 GB model is now $129 (+tax) or 163€ (incl. VAT) which is $70/50€ cheaper than the previous one
  • The (new) 128 GB model costs $149 (+tax) or 183€ (incl. VAT) which is still cheaper than the previous model in 64 GB

I recommend buying the 128 GB model because of the added capacity and the ethernet port which will prevent the video quality to degrade in case your Wi-Fi router starts to be congested.

On a side note, the Apple TV remote can now be charged via USB-C rather than Lightning and Apple no longer provides its charging cable in the box.

This new Apple TV 4K can be ordered right now and will start shipping on Nov 4, 2022.

Operating system updates

On?Oct 10, 2022, Apple released?iOS 16.0.3?to squash some bugs and patch a single (but nasty) security vulnerability.

For more info, here are links to the latest Security Alert in?English ?and?French .

Apple also announced that the first release of?macOS Ventura?will ship alongside?iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1?on?Oct 24, 2022.

I strongly recommend refraining from installing those as there are?still many bugs.

On the Mac side, the first Release Candidate had to be pulled out and replaced by a second one which is being tested by developers as I write these lines.

Both iOS 16.1 and iPadOS 16.1 are bringing welcome new features, like Live Activities and the iCloud Shared Photo Library, unfortunately, alongside various bugs and issues (Source:?iPhoneTricks ).

The Notes synchronisation issue that's plaguing me since starting to beta test iOS 16 hasn't been fixed yet, even with the Release Candidate of iOS 16.1.

The reason why Apple is releasing iPadOS 16.1 is simple: it will ship with the new iPads that have just been announced

Besides, if someone turns on the iCloud Shared Photo Library feature on their iPhone or Mac, then iPadOS 16.1 will be required to access that library.

In parallel, Beta testers are evaluating?iOS 15.7.1, which, at the time of writing,?breaks Face ID for some people.

Once again, it's best to wait 48 to 72 hours before installing any operating system update and stay on the previously supported ones (iOS 15, macOS Big Sur and macOS Monterey) if you're using your devices professionally.
