As the 34th International Publishers Congress approaches, the International Publishers Association (IPA) has officially launched a campaign aimed at mobilizing the global publishing sector to contribute to the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With just 96 days until the Congress, which will feature a keynote address from the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications, Melissa Fleming, the IPA is calling on publishers worldwide to join its "Turning the Page: 1000 Actions for a Sustainable Future" initiative.
The goal of the campaign is to collect and highlight 1000 new actions from the publishing industry by the end of 2024. These actions, which will be featured on the IPA SDG dashboard, will showcase the various initiatives, projects, campaigns, and reports that demonstrate how publishers are contributing to a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world.
"Turning the Page" is part of the broader UN campaign, "1 Million Actions for Our Common Future," designed to inspire individuals and organizations across sectors to take meaningful steps toward achieving the SDGs. Karine Pansa, President of the IPA, emphasized the urgency of this mission, stating, "We need to make more progress more quickly on the Sustainable Development Goals, and publishing can play its part. I know publishers everywhere are taking action, big and small, to make a difference. We call on all publishers to tell us about what you are doing and inspire others to get involved."
Mary Glenn, Chief of UN Publications, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the significance of the publishing industry's support. "The UN is gearing up for the Summit of the Future in September, and all our efforts are focused on helping to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Support from the publishing industry for the 1 Million Actions for Our Common Future comes at a pivotal moment and demonstrates that only together can we create a better future," she said.
The campaign is open to all publishers and publishing organizations. The IPA encourages participants to share their SDG-related activities, whether they are internal initiatives or community-focused projects, to inspire others and contribute to the global effort.
